It looks like fans can see him, or they will at least one more time before 2022 comes to a close. Variety reports WWE and global media star John Cena is set to make one more appearance on WWE SmackDown before 2022 comes to a close.
WWE has not yet made Cena’s appearance in three weeks official, but tonight’s edition of SmackDown is yet to air. WWE Hall of Famer and Olympic gold medal winner Kurt Angle is scheduled to appear on tonight’s show for a special birthday celebration.
JOHN CENA MAKING APPEARANCE ON FINAL WWE SMACKDOWN OF 2022
According to the report, the 16-time WWE World Champion will appear on the final edition of Friday Night SmackDown on Dec. 30. The event will be held at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. An individual with knowledge on the subject also informed Variety that more announcements on the major episode are planned for the coming weeks.
Cena last appeared on the Jun. 27 edition of Monday Night Raw. The appearance celebrated the 20th anniversary of his WWE debut. Cena was introduced by former WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon himself during the anniversary appearance. Cena did not wrestle that night, but he spoke on the microphone and appeared in some backstage segments.
Cena has not competed in the ring for WWE since a dark match at a SmackDown live event that took place at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Sept. 10, 2021. His last match on TV was a losing effort to reigning WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns at WWE SummerSlam 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Cena has been a notable and highly in-demand entertainment commodity in recent years, between his starring roles in films such as The Suicide Squad and its TV spinoff, Peacemaker. The show also has a second season that’s currently in the works. He’s also working on a Looney Tunes-themed comedy for Warner Bros. called Coyote vs. Acme, where Cena will portray the CEO of the Acme company, who Wile E. Coyote is pursuing a lawsuit against because of their constantly failing products.
Cena will also reprise his role as Jakob Toretto in the upcoming Fast X sequel, the 10th installment of The Fast and the Furious film franchise. Cena made his debut as the character, Dom Toretto’s long-lost brother, in F9: The Fast Saga last year. The film will arrive in theaters on May 19, 2023.
As for when John Cena will return to the ring, nothing has been announced or confirmed as of yet. Cena has already stated he plans on getting back into the ring again at some point, but it’s unknown when that would happen.
Celebrity YouTuber Logan Paul has recently challenged John Cena to a match at WrestleMania 39 in the Los Angeles area next year. Paul recently challenged WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns for his title at WWE Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia last month in a losing effort.
While Logan Paul has put the challenge out there for John Cena, it’s unknown if that matchup will take place. WrestleMania 39 will be a two-night affair. It will be held on Apr. 1-2, 2023 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The event will be broadcast live on Peacock for viewers in the United States, and WWE Network for international fans.
