Prime Video announced that a God of War series will go under production. The show will be co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios in association with PlayStation Productions. The series will premiere on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
The series will be based on the 2018 video game released on the PlayStation 4. Exiling from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, Kratos hangs up his weapons and lives anonymously in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak—his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.

Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios called God of War “a compelling character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling.” Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios said she is “proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series.”
The news comes not long after the very successful launch of God of War: Ragnarök, the sequel to 2018’s installment. During The Game Awards 2022, God of War: Ragnarök won six awards including best narrative, best score and music, best audio design, best performance (Christopher Judge as Kratos), innovation in accessibility, and best action/adventure.

It is interesting, but not much of a surprise, at least for me, that the live-action will focus on Krato’s time in Midgard. Starting the show with Kratos living a quiet and anonymous life, while slowly unveiling to the viewers his brutal and bloody past will allow a broader approach for storytelling purposes. For those stumbling upon the series without any previous information about Krato’s past will be in for a frost giant-sized surprise. I hope that his previous battles with Ares, Zeus, and his conversations with Athena make it as flashbacks. I would love to see an entire episode dedicated to the original trilogy, perhaps more than just one.
It won’t be long until speculations on who will play Kratos and Atreus surface around the internet. As matter of fact, we’ve done that months ago and you can read it here.
Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) serves as showrunner and executive produces of the series. Academy Award Nominees Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Children of Men) will serve as writers and also executive produce. Santa Monica Studio’s Studio Creative Director, Cory Barlog will also serve as executive producer. Additional executive producers include Playstation Productions Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Santa Monica Studio’s Yumi Yang as well as Vertigo’s Roy Lee. Santa Monica Studio’s Jeff Ketcham will serve as a co-executive producer.
