Nebula has definitely had a big journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting as a secondary character in the first Guardians of the Galaxy and working her way through a core member of the team through the events of the Holiday Special, and now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Speaking at the press conference for the threequel, out this Friday, actress Karen Gillan was asked about this by moderator Nathan Fillion and replied that recent events have definitely made a change in her personality and feelings, while still being true to what she’s always been — just a hard nut to crack. Check out their exchange during the conference:

NATHAN FILLION: Here’s another journey of Nebula. She’s probably had one of the more difficult, probably the longest journey. She’s really flipped the coin. She was on the other side.

KAREN GILLAN: She was, she’s had quite the arc.

NATHAN FILLION: She was a terrible.

KAREN GILLAN: I wouldn’t say terrible. It’s understood, isn’t it? Yeah, she was pretty bitter.

NATHAN FILLION: In this, is she nicer? Is she kinder? Is she coming around? Where is she now on this journey?

KAREN GILLAN: I think, you know, post-Thanos being eliminated from her life, she’s starting to flourish a little bit more and she’s starting to have a lighter personality and she’s a little more willing to show vulnerability.

It’s been a long journey for everyone in the Guardians, especially Karen Gillan as Nebula

It’s definitely an interesting exercise to rewind the tape ten years and revisit the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Back then, Star-Lord was dealing with his place in the galaxy, which he still is in the new film, but with a whole new perspective on what’s important for him, and who. Gamora was a completely different person, quite literally, which might be off-putting for the threequel and those who were hoping for a resolution to her arc. Rocket had built a giant wall around himself that will be torn to pieces in the third film; according to reviews, this is where the emotion of the film lies, sometimes to unsettling effects.

But Nebula’s big change, which happened in the second film, is definitely the big one, as evidenced by Avengers: Endgame, where 2014 Nebula found out her alternate timeline self had betrayed Thanos and gone rogue. It’s still unknown how much will Nebula progress in the upcoming film, or how exactly, as her place in the story, besides being a member of the team, is unclear for now, but Gillan has certainly been a champion of the film from the very start, and that should be enough to get us excited for it.

The entire cast of the previous films is back, with new additions including Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary, Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, and Maria Bakalova as Cosmo The Space Dog. If you missed it, here is the official synopsis for the film:

In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.
