Matt Hardy shares what he thinks of WWE’s newest championship and Cody Rhodes’ controversial loss to Roman Reigns.

It has been over a week since Triple H unveiled WWE’s newest championship. Well it isn’t exactly new. WWE has decided to reintroduce the World Heavyweight Championship with an added twist. The big gold belt will have a big WWE logo right in the middle.

The world has had a week to decide whether or not they like it. For the most part the wrestling world seems to like the championship design. The decision to make a new championship not as much.

However, what do the wrestlers think of the new championship?  Current AEW wrestler and future WWE Hall of Famer Matt Hardy revealed his thoughts on the World Heavyweight Championship in a recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy.

“I’m okay with it. I know there were a lot of people right from the jump who came out and said they didn’t like it. But I’m okay with the design,” Matt Hardy said, “It’s a combination of the big WWE symbol and a big gold belt, and I’m okay with it. I think it’ll grow on me as time goes on.”

The Need For A World Title On Each Brand

WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Matt Hardy acknowledged that having two separate world championships is necessary.  Having two separate championships and two separate champions, one for Raw and one for SmackDown, will add excitement to WWE. It’ll help to set up bigger matches for both brands and premium live events.

Having one champion everyone was going after left some of WWE’s top talent pushed down to the mid-card. Former world champions like Finn Balor, AJ Styles and Randy Orton were left out of the top title picture.

Since Reigns has been drafted to SmackDown we now know that the championship will be a Raw championship. This limits the choices of possible champions way down. Currently the most likely future champions on Raw are Gunther, Drew McIntyre, The Miz, Shinsuke Nakamura, Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Braun Strowman and the front runner Cody Rhodes

Night two of the draft took place last night on Raw. It should be noted that Brock Lesnar is a free agent and is able to appear on both brands.

Speaking of former and possible future world champion contenders Hardy shared his thoughts on Rhodes’ devastating loss to Reigns at WrestleMania.

“I still think the title we need to see Cody win is Roman Reigns’ [Undisputed Universal Championship]. He ultimately has to win that at the end of the day,” Matt Hardy said. “He needs to be the guy to unseat him. If you really want to make him the face of the company, and I think he’s a guy who there’s a huge argument for making him the face of the company currently. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. I think someone else greatly benefits from winning the World Heavyweight title. And we’ll see what the future holds for Cody Rhodes.”

I agree with Hardy that Rhodes needs to be the guy to dethrone Reigns. The tough thing to think about is when. Having Reigns being champion until next year’s WrestleMania is way too long. Hopefully we will see it at SummerSlam this summer or Survivor Series this November and Rhodes moves to SmackDown.

Hardy is also right that Rhodes doesn’t need the World Heavyweight Championship right now in his career.  It will be better to build him back up after Reigns broke him. If WWE wants to give the new championship to someone deserving then Zayn is at the top of the list. However, if WWE is looking to give someone a huge push then I think Gunther, Bronson Reed and Nakamura fit that perfectly.

Out of the list of names on Raw, who is your number one choice? Who do you think WWE will give it to?  Do you think Rhodes will get it? Should he get it? Let us know if you think Rhodes will still be the one to dethrone Reigns even though they are on separate brands.
