The Flood Director Brandon Slagle knows a thing or two about making a fun movie, his latest project showcases those talents, pitting a group of prisoners against some very hungry alligators.
The Flood exudes the ridiculous, high-octane nature of ’80s action movies that dominated the industry, leaving lasting memories for generations of kids.
While Slagle has more than proven himself capable of leading the action flicks that dominate the late-night schedule of the USA Channel, he didn’t hesitate to name a few franchises he’d love to tackle if given the opportunity.
Transformers, G.I. Joe, the list goes on
The Illuminerdi got to sit down with Brandon Slagle ahead of the worldwide release of The Flood, and, of course, we had to ask the director what nerd franchises he’d love to get his hands on.
“Of course, being a kid who grew up in the ’80s, I want to do a Transformers movie. I would do Hot Rod right because he’s the best character ever made, and I wouldn’t make him some weird French guy.”

The director didn’t hesitate to poke fun at Hot Rod’s depiction in Transformers: The Last Knight, saying that, given the opportunity, he’d do the character justice. Slagle also reassured any worried fans that he isn’t anti-French, being a quarter French himself, but his love for Hot Rod runs deeper than his heritage.
As a child of the ’80s, Brandon Slagle’s choice of franchises doesn’t end at Transformers, as he’d also love to bring G.I. Joe back to the big screen or combine the two into one.
G.I. Joe, Voltron, or M.A.S.K., actually, is really, really, really underrated. It’s basically Transformers and G.I. Joe as one thing, for people who may not be familiar. But yeah, any of those, I would love to do.

This interview happened before Transformers: Rise of the Beasts teased that exact crossover, so Slagle really may be on to something with his choice of franchises. We’re not saying he can see the future, but this writer definitely thinks Paramount should look toward Slagle for their inevitable crossover movie. He was a fan long before he was a director, giving him another perspective on the beloved franchises.
As if it wasn’t obvious how strong his passion is for the nerd franchises that dominated the ’80s, Brandon Slagle offered an even deeper cut that he believes desperately needs a reboot.
“Here’s one: Airwolf. Airwolf is due for a reboot. For anyone that doesn’t know, basically, Airwolf is this top-secret [laughs] I don’t even remember. It doesn’t matter, but it was Jan-Michael Vincent in his prime and Ernest Borgnine piloting a badass helicopter and blwoing stuff up.”

We won’t lie; even we had to do a quick Google search after the director brought up Airwolf, proving he may be in a league of his own when it comes to ’80s media. However, after seeing The Flood, it’s evident that Slagle has the exact eye for filmmaking that dominated that era, and it’d be a joy to see him tackle any of his favorite ’80s franchises.
