Knives Out and Glass Onion were both critically acclaimed with the films reaching 97% and 92% respectably on Rotten Tomatoes. After the over-the-top mystery that detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) had to solve in the past two films, fans and critics alike are waiting to see what will happen next in the franchise. Director and screenwriter Rian Johnson is finally going to make the third film happen and in an interview with The Wrap, the filmmaker talked about how he’s working on Knives Out 3.
THE FILM IS COMING ALONG
It seems like within each film, the mystery becomes wilder and wilder. When you think you know what’s going to happen, another twist of events occurs, leaving everyone stunned. Though there isn’t much detail about what crazy case Benoit Blanc has to try to solve, it will most likely be wilder than the last one. According to Johnson, the next investigative scenario has already been decided.
“It’s coming along. I obviously couldn’t work during the strike, and now that it’s over, I’m diving in full force, and so it’s coming along. I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head. It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing.”

While Knives Out was first released at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival and was later distributed in theaters a few months later in November 2019, the success was what got Netflix interested. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was eventually released on Netflix in December 2022.

The film included an ensemble cast that included Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, and Leslie Odom Jr. Netflix bought the rights to the second and third Knives Out movies for a reported $450 million back in 2021.
IS THE THIRD FILM THE FINAL KNIVES OUT FILM?
Even though Netflix has only bought the rights up to the third upcoming film, Johnson has hinted that more films could be on the cards. “As long as the two of us are still having fun, and as long as we can continue to make these truly new experiences each time, and find new ways to challenge ourselves…” he previously told Total Film.
According to Johnson, his aim for the franchise is to have an entirely new cast each time. He first starts with the structure of the story and what the audience’s journey will be like when they go through the film. Even though not much has been revealed about the third film, Johnson says he wants the next film to be located in America.
“There’s a lot of tempting things about going to Paris or the Alps but I feel it’s really important that these are American movies. Even with Glass Onion, it’s set overseas but it’s a group of Americans who are trapped on an island together, so bringing it back to somewhere a little closer to home I think could be a good thing for the next one.”

As of right now, the only actor who is set to be involved in the third film is Daniel Craig. The other cast members have yet to be revealed and there isn’t an official release date for the film just yet. Johnson has said that he’s been working on this film since the start of 2023 so this means that the film won’t arrive until next year or even later due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
