“Lock the doors. Stay in your rooms. Everyone is in danger…”

Netflix has just released the trailer for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and it seems like the sequel is doubling down on all the star-studded shenanigans of the original 2019 Knives Out film. Daniel Craig returns as the mysterious and dapper Kentucky-born detective Benoit Blanc, this time taking on a new case with a new cast of potential suspects. The film will also star Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.

Fans of the original film are likely to be excited by this new mystery, which is set in a beautiful Mediterranean paradise. From the official description:

“If Knives Out was about the murderous ties of flesh and blood, Glass Onion makes a good case for being just as wary of one’s closest friends. When tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites some of his nearest and dearest for a getaway on his private Greek island, it soon becomes clear that all is not perfect in paradise. And when someone turns up dead, well, who better than [Benoit] Blanc to peel back the layers of intrigue?”

Writer and director Rian Johnson (Knives Out, Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, Looper) is returning for the sequel, which he wrote during the pandemic. The plot is said to take inspiration from the Agatha Christie-based film Evil Under the Sun (1982), which featured a similar tropical paradise mystery premise, as well as a little-known film called The Last of Shiela (1973).

While the first film was released theatrically by Lionsgate in 2019, this sequel will be released on Netflix. In 2021, Netflix won a staggeringly expensive bidding war, forking over the mind-blowing price tag of $469 Million for the rights to the original Knives Out film and any future sequels. With such an enormous cost, one can imagine that this isn’t the last we’re going to see of Detective Blanc and the Knives Out world, and we wouldn’t be surprised to hear about more spinoffs films or series coming to the streaming giant in the near future.

Further, Kate Hudson is playing a fashion designer named Birdie Jay, and Jessica Henwick is playing her eccentric assistant Peg. Dave Bautista stars as a YouTube star named Duke Cody, and Madelyn Cline is playing his assistant and girlfriend Whiskey.
