Many viewers and critics praised the series for its homage to past sitcoms and for the cast performance. Within each episode, fans began to theorize what Marvel characters will be introduced. One of the characters many began questioning if he will be making his appearance was the perennial villain, Mephisto.

Producer and director of Wandavision, Matt Shakman was recently questioned about the Mephisto theory where fans were convinced about the character’s appearance.

In an interview with Inverse, Shakman spoke about working with Marvel Studios and his time being the director and producer of WandaVision. When it came to talking about the series, it was pointed out how big MCU fanatics studied each frame of the series and were ultimately convinced that the supervillain Mephisto was going to make his appearance at some point of the series. According to Shakman, as much as it was fun to see these theories online, the character was never part of the plan.

“There were some deep reading of the text that led to certain conclusions that were wrong. Mephisto was never part of our plan. So that was a head-scratcher. But hey, he’s a great character.”

Even though there was some disappointment over the character not being part of Wandavision, fans eventually forgot about the ordeal and were excited when it was announced that Shakman was going to be the director of Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four film. His upcoming project is for Apple TV+’s series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Mephisto is an extra-dimensional Demon who rules a fiery pocket dimension that he calls “Hell” or “Hades.” He is there to exploit Earth human beings’ belief in a single being of absolute evil, who is often referred to as Satan. The character’s true origin has been lost but there have been many stories that claim to tell his true origin. One of those stories is where the primordial entity known as Nemesis was born at the beginning of time and was alone in its universe the Fist Cosmos.

It used its power to create life from its own form but the creations turned out to be evil and becoming demons. Disappointed and saddened by what it has created, it was eventually wiped out. The entity seeing that it is alone once again, takes its own life and the remains become the Infinity Stones. The demons were once again reborn and one of them being Mephisto but the power of the Stones was forbidden to these beings.

Throughout time, the character has met many characters, one of them being Thor. He met Thor when the hero was stuck in Loki’s body and was banished to Mephisto’s realm. Once Mephisto touched Thor’s shoulder, he instantly knew that it was the God of Thunder and not the mischievous trickster God. The human cyclist Johnny Blaze aka Ghost Rider also made a pact with Mephisto, who he thought was Satan, by exchanging his soul for Mephisto’s saving his stepfather from dying of cancer.

The character has a long history of meeting and battling Marvel’s heroes since he was first introduced. There are even rumors that Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly playing Mephisto and he will appear in Disney+’s upcoming Wandavision sequel series, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. It hasn’t been officially confirmed but it will be interesting to see this character making his appearance in the MCU.
