Vincent D’Onofrio has always been a fan favorite when it comes to taking on the role of Kingpin. The actor first took on the antagonist role back in 2015 in Netflix’s rendition of Daredevil. While Charlie Cox was praised for his role as the titular character, Daredevil, D’Onforio became a household name in the world of Daredevil. When it was announced that the series was coming to an end in 2018, many fans didn’t take it very well. After three years the actor reprised his role as the villainous character in 2021’s Disney+ series, Hawkeye. D’Onofrio is now back once again in the upcoming Disney+/Hulu series Echo.

In the recent press conference for the series, Vincent D’Onofrio spoke about his time working on the character in Daredevil and in Echo.

Kingpin has always been a compelling character in the comics. He’s a ruthless leader who is always one step ahead when it comes to forming his plan to take over everything. D’Onofrio says that he feels lucky to have gotten the opportunity to play the character with the Netflix series.

“I’ve just been lucky to get the opportunity, beginning with the Netflix show with really good writing to bring him forward in a new way. Now in Echo, it’s just more good writing and without the writing, I can’t really do much other than show up. The writing is there and it brings the character forward.”

He also praises the way Echo handles his character as he felt this was the first time since the Netflix series where Fisk was portrayed best. “It’s very similar to the way it was in the original series and that’s very exciting for me. It has a grittier feel to it.”

Maya loses her father at the hand of Fisk. She didn’t realize this revelation until it was revealed to her in the Hawkeye series. According to D’Onofrio, he was very impressed and proud working with Alaqua in bringing the father-daughter dynamic to the small screen.

“The truth is, she’s so present and what can I say? The girl knows what she’s doing. I was impressed every day and it was amazing. The story that Alaqua and I were trying to serve as the characters has a lot to do with it. At the end of the day when the camera’s rolling and she was always there in every capacity. I was able to react off of her and her off of me. I felt like we were very fortunate to be able to portray these characters as a father-daughter kind of relationship.”

D’Onofrio praises Alaqua, stating that it takes talent and guts to take on a character like Maya Lopez. “The girl carried the show like a pro, man. You know. There’s nothing you can say, other than she’s just extremely impressive.”
