Look up in the sky! It’s a bird, no it’s a plane! It’s not you Superman. Is it Supergirl? Nope, not yet, but we’re getting close.
DC Studios is beginning to screen test actresses to play Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl. According to Deadline, House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock, CODA’s Emilia Jones, and the recently animated Supergirl herself, Meg Donnely, are among the contenders to play the last daughter of Krypton.
Any of these actresses could be the face of the woman of tomorrow, however, it is not outside the realm of possibility for DC Studios to offer the coveted role to a famous face.
Who Will Be Supergirl?
The DC Studios co-CEO and creative steward James Gunn is quite active in the casting process, as the Kryptonian heroine may very likely make a cameo appearance in an upcoming DC project other than Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow sooner rather than later. Interestingly enough, a search for a director has not been completed yet as DC is set on securing their Supergirl given that she’ll make her DCU debut in a non-Supergirl project before she stars in her movie.

Gunn announced the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film in January last year, as part of DCU’s first slate, “Chapter: Gods & Monsters”. The film will be based on Tom King’s comic of the same name that made its debut in 2022. Ana Nogueira will pen the script.

The film will depict a tougher Supergirl still struggling after witnessing the genocide of Krypton. Since she was older than her infant cousin Kal-El, she has all her fond memories of her family and time on Krypton so the trauma of losing not only her family, but her entire planet impacts her on a deeper level.
“In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re use to seeing.”
