The newest entry in the franchise arrives in theaters later this May. The Maze Runner filmmaker Wes Ball takes over as director for the sequel, which is set several generations in the future following the events of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. Caesar’s reign is over, and apes are now the dominant species living harmoniously on planet Earth. However, humans have taken to living in the shadows.

In Kingdom, a new tyrannical ape leader, Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand) starts building his empire, while one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will bring him to question all that he has known about his past and make choices that will define the future for apes and humans alike. The upcoming sequel stars Owen Teague, Freya Allan of The Witcher fame, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy.

Ball directs the film from a script by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison, based on characters created by Jaffa and Silver. It’s produced by Ball, Hartwick, Rick Jaffa, Silver, and Jason Reed. Meanwhile, Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping are executive producing the project.

Provided the film franchise is continuing with the notion that the 1968 original film is tied together, it looks like the new storyline is taking things further in the direction of the classic sci-fi post-apocalyptic adventure. The name of Allan’s character, Nova, is also curious. It’s a name shared by a character in the last film and of course some of the earliest films in the franchise. 20th Century Studios also revealed the new character posters for the upcoming feature:

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on May 10. It will be screened in IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, and premium screens everywhere.
