Pierce will be joining alongside David Corenswet (Clark Kent/Superman) and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) in the upcoming DC solo Superman film.

PERRY WHITE: MANAGING EDITOR OF THE DAILY PLANET

The Daily Planet‘s highly respected journalist, Perry White, is one of the most recognizable characters who works closely with Clark Kent and Lois Lane. His first appearance was in October 1986 in The Man of Steel #2. The character was first a copyboy for The Daily Planet and was a friend of the infamous business mogul, Lex Luthor. They both grew up in Metropolis’ Suicide Slum and became close friends as children.

Eventually, Perry began to despise his friend when he found out that Lex Luthor attempted to shut down The Daily Planet. He was able to get some help from some friends and the popular newspaper company was saved. Lois Lane first got a job at the newspaper when she was 15 years old and a few years later, Clark Kent became part of the staff when Ken was able to “secure” the first interview with Superman.

White’s origin story would see many changes throughout different comic storylines. In Superman: Birthright, it is explained that Lex Luthor grew up alongside Kent and Lana Lang in Smallville. White isn’t friends with Lex Luthor and gives Kent a job in the newspaper after he writes an exposé on Luthor after an attack that happened in the city. In the rebooted universe of Infinite Crisis, The Daily Planet is failing and is on a decline of print journalism which leads to Perry trying to make ends meet and continues publishing. Even though the pay is not the greatest and Clark Kent is inexperienced, Perry hires the young reporter which leads to Superman making his first appearance in rescuing Lois Lane.

In this universe, Lex Luthor owns the majority of newspaper companies where they are forced to write negative things about the hero. The Daily Planet is the only newspaper that he isn’t able to force to smear Superman’s name which leads the military to intervene in trying to take him down. After the events of Big Blue being seen as a hero, the world begins to change the way they think of him which leads to The Daily Planet being saved from bankruptcy. This leads to the company becoming the city’s most profitable newspaper because of their exclusive interviews.

Before Wendell Pierce, the last actor who took on the role of Perry White was Laurence Fishburne in the 2013 Superman film, Man of Steel. James Gunn’s new film arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025 and will be the start of the new big-screen DC Universe.
