After rumors hit X, formerly known as Twitter, earlier this week, Marvel Games has revealed Marvel Rivals, an upcoming team-based hero shooter. You can check out the newly revealed announcement trailer below!

Marvel Rivals pits heroes and villains against each other

Developed by NetEase, Marvel Rivals blends the competitive gameplay of Overwatch with the superhero action of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. The 6v6 game will see players choose from a roster of Avengers, X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, and other Marvel heroes and villains as they go head-to-head in PvP game modes across many famous Marvel locations.

Despite its multiplayer focus, Marvel Rivals will feature an ongoing story, with NetEase adding new characters, maps, and content every season, similar to Fortnite. The company already has a “robust” post-launch roadmap in the works.

At launch, the game will boast a 16-character roster, including fan-favorite Marvel characters like Spider-Man, Black Panther, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, and Storm. The characters are split between the standard damage, tank, and support classes, each with their own playstyle, special moves, and ultimate abilities. In the trailer, we see Black Panther summon the panther goddess Bast while Loki transforms into other characters on the battlefield.

Unlike games in the genre, Marvel Rivals will feature destructible environments and team-up skills. Team-ups are special duo attacks that combine the powers of two characters. In the trailer, Hulk imbues Iron Man’s repulsors with gamma radiation, and Rocket Racoon rides on Groot, like in the movies. Only certain characters can perform team-ups with each other, likely related to their relationship in the comics.

Marvel Rivals is being developed for PC, but NetEase stated in the game’s official discord that they’re exploring potential releases on other platforms. The game currently does not have a release date as of yet, as development is still in full swing, but a closed alpha begins this May.
