Deadpool 3 will reportedly not be following its predecessors’ naming conventions, and will instead have a title that reflects the content.
In an interview with The Wrap, director Shawn Levy has said that he’s played around with a range of different titles for the film.
“No, there’s no title yet. I sometimes refer to it as Deadpool vs Wolverine or Deadpool and Wolverine or Deadpool 3 With Wolvie — we’ve got a few titles we’ve been bandying about, but boy, it’s a tough one.”
I guess that should take care of any lingering “Will Wolverine actually appear?” questions.
What’s Wolverine Doing Here?
This has been an interesting question for fans to consider since Wolverine’s presence was confirmed and one that has led to lots of speculation regarding the canonicity of Logan in a post-Deadpool world.
But Levy has been very clear that he won’t be abandoning the plot of Logan. In an interview with BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast, he said
“I have always said that I can’t wait for Deadpool 3 to come out because all I want to do is give interviews alongside Ryan [Reynolds] where we talk about our reverence for the movie Logan. Logan is canon. We love Logan. That happened. I want the world to know, as the producer and director, all of us share a deep love and respect for Logan, every aspect of how it’s crafted, and all the events that take place.”
Logan’s Fate
Logan is not set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so if you missed it you haven’t missed out on any overarching MCU plot. Released in 2017 and directed by James Mangold it is instead part of the X-Men franchise.
The movie is set in the near future, where mutants are on the brink of extinction. Logan (played by Hugh Jackman) is now aging and his healing abilities are diminishing. He is working as a chauffeur and trying to live a low-profile life. Charles Xavier (played by Patrick Stewart), also aging, is suffering from a degenerative brain condition that makes his psychic powers dangerous.

Logan’s life takes a turn when a mysterious young girl named Laura (played by Dafne Keen) comes into his life. Laura possesses powers similar to Wolverine’s, including retractable claws. Logan discovers that Laura is a product of a secretive program called Transigen, which aims to create mutant soldiers. The two, along with Charles Xavier, embark on a road trip to find a safe haven for mutants.
As they are pursued by the ruthless Donald Pierce (played by Boyd Holbrook) and his enforcers, the film explores themes of legacy, family, and the consequences of a world without mutants.
Logan is respected for its darker and more mature tone compared to other superhero films. It also marks Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Wolverine until now, and so brings closure to his portrayal of the iconic character after nearly two decades.
Deadpool’s Impact
The Deadpool film series follows the adventures of Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary, who undergoes an experimental procedure to cure his terminal cancer. The procedure, however, leaves him with accelerated healing powers but also disfigured. Wade adopts the alter ego Deadpool and sets out to track down the man responsible for his transformation.
In 2016’s Deadpool Wade Wilson (played by Ryan Reynolds) is diagnosed with terminal cancer. In a desperate attempt to survive and be with his girlfriend Vanessa (played by Morena Baccarin), he undergoes an experimental procedure conducted by Ajax (played by Ed Skrein) and Angel Dust (played by Gina Carano). The procedure leaves him scarred but with accelerated healing powers.

Seeking revenge and hoping to reunite with Vanessa, Deadpool hunts down Ajax, who is responsible for his condition. Along the way, he assembles a team of fellow mutants, including Colossus (played by Stefan Kapičić) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (played by Brianna Hildebrand). The film received widespread acclaim for its unique approach to the superhero genre, humor, and Ryan Reynolds’ performance. It became a massive box-office success.
The 2018 follow-up saw Deadpool seeking redemption by protecting a young mutant named Russell Collins, aka Firefist (played by Julian Dennison), from the time-traveling cyborg Cable (played by Josh Brolin). To help him, Deadpool forms a team called X-Force. Like its predecessor, Deadpool 2 received positive reviews for its humor, action sequences, and the introduction of new characters. While not as groundbreaking as the first film, it was well-received by audiences and continued the success of the Deadpool franchise.
Both Deadpool films stand out in the superhero genre for their unique blend of humor, meta-commentary, and a more mature, R-rated approach to storytelling. Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of the titular character has been widely praised for capturing the essence of the comic book version of Deadpool.
What do we know about Deadpool 3 so far?
Not a whole lot, to be honest.
While specific details are being kept under wraps, rumors suggest the film will go meta, with Wade and Logan finding themselves trapped in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Other reports point to the TVA (from Disney Plus’ Loki) being involved, potentially pulling Agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Miss Minutes into the movie. This could firmly cement Deadpool and Wolverine both within the MCU and at the heart of Phase 5, while the multiverse expands further.
Deadpool 3 (or whatever it ends up being called) was due for theatrical release on May 3, 2024. However, the recently resolved SAG-AFTRA strike will undoubtedly have caused delays.
