Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is riding an insane high, entering 2024 as an early Game of the Year candidate. And the second installment in Square Enix’s remake trilogy has seemingly found an unlikely ally: Apex Legends.

Teased at The Game Awards 2023, the crossover between the two gaming giants seemed like nothing more than your standard cosmetic affair, but boy, were we wrong. Instead, the battle royale hero shooter’s crossover offers a limited-time game mode, Buster Swords, Materia drops, and plenty of Final Fantasy-themed cosmetics.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Takeover Comes to Apex Legends
To hype up Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s February release, Respawn Entertainment is teaming up with Square to bring the iconic franchise to Apex Legends. Dubbed a “Final Fantasy VII Takeover,” the new game mode will replace Apex’s unranked battle royale mode starting January 9 and lasting three weeks, ending on January 30.
During that time, players can experience what it’s like being a member of SOLDIER, wielding a Buster Sword R2R5 to dash, block bullets, and unleash a powerful Limit Break on your opponents. However, you’ll need to have a bit of luck on your side, as the iconic Final Fantasy VII weaponry will randomly spawn alongside Apex’s usual in-game loot.
The limited-time game mode also sees the addition of Materia to Apex Legends, allowing players to harness the spells and summons of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. “Materia Hop-Ups” will be available courtesy of Apex’s walking loot boxes, called “Cacticks,” an homage to Final Fantasy’s adorable Cactuars. Players who pick up Materia are granted different benefits based on the color.
- Blue Materia: Damaging enemies heals you.
- Green Materia: Reloading an empty weapon emits a shockwave, damaging and slowing nearby enemies.
- Purple Materia: Random critical strikes do extra damage.
- Red Materia: Summon a Nessie companion that attacks enemies.
- Yellow Materia: Damaging enemies reveal their remaining health.
Naturally, a crossover wouldn’t be complete without a healthy amount of cosmetic items, and there will be plenty of Final Fantasy-themed skins to choose from. Watson gets a Moogle-inspired outfit, Wraith becomes Tifa, Crypto gets a Cloud skin, Horizon turns into Aerith, Newcastle is Barret, and Valkyrie is Yuffie. The crossover boasts 36 Final Fantasy VII Rebirth-themed cosmetics, including weapon skins, emotes, and a Buster Sword R5 Heirloom. But you’ll need to act fast, as Apex will only offer them during the three weeks of the event, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
