Spider-Woman may be closer to the MCU than we think.

Sony Pictures is working feverishly to expand their universe of Marvel heroes through the aptly named Sony Universe of Marvel Characters. Already completed is the 2021 horror film Morbius with Jared Leto in the leading role, and there are is also the ridiculously named sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage directed by Andy Serkis and currently set for release next June.

Sony is also expanding on the hero side of their Spidey-based movies with the new rumored Spider-Woman movie, directed by action star Olivia Wilde.

While the film is still under Sony’s blanket, there seems to be some involvement from one of the biggest names in the world of Marvel movies. Wilde recently revealed some Spider-Woman details in her appearance on Evan Ross Katz’s EW podcast.

The director said the following on the podcast:

“All I can say is that this is by far the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to me because not only do I feel like I get to tell a story that… God, like, listen to me trying to avoid like Kevin Feige’s pellet gun”

Kevin Feige has obviously had a good relationship going between Marvel Studios and Sony over the last few years after the two powerhouses agreed to let Spider-Man male his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he will make his sixth appearance in next year’s Spider-Man 3. The interesting point about these comments is how involved Feige seems to be in the Sony films that, at this moment, aren’t a part of the ever growing MCU.

It’s still a complete mystery as to whether or not the SUMC will ever be known as canon with the adventures of Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-man, but there always seems to be at least teases of their potential continuity together. It will likely still be a while before there is any concrete information on the studio’s connection outside of MCU Spidey, but Wilde’s movie should be an exciting branch in the SUMC nonetheless.

There is still no confirmation on an official title for Olivia Wilde’s female-led Sony movie, or an official release date. Are you excited for what’s to come? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and check back with The Illuminerdi for the latest MCU and Sony news.
