The CW’s Powerpuff Girls series has faced as much turmoil as the city its characters protect, and took yet another blow with the loss of one of its leads, Chloe Bennet. Bennet was set to play the team leader Blossom alongside Dove Cameron’s Bubbles and Yana Perrault as Buttercup.

The show received widespread criticism upon its announcement a year ago. The CW has a history of cranking up the angst on their kid or superhero properties (See Riverdale and their Arrowverse shows). So when the premise for the Powerpuff Girls continuation (called Powerpuff) announced it would follow the beloved trio as world-weary 20-somethings resentful of their childhood heroism, many eyes rolled. Worse still, an image of their costumes and a leaked pilot script circulated around social media was so poorly received that the network went back to the drawing board, setting the show back several months.
Chloe Bennet Is No Longer A Powerpuff Girl
Chloe Bennet seemingly exited the project due to scheduling conflicts, but Cameron and Perrault are still attached along with Donald Faison as Professor Utonium and Nicholas Podany as Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr., the son of their arch enemy Mojo Jojo, among others.
The CW’s line of superhero shows over the past decade have mostly been embraced by general audiences unfamiliar with the source material, but with something as ubiquitous (and recent) as The Powerpuff Girls, it’s going to be interesting to see how the show is received whenever it does arrive on our screens.

The Powerpuff Girls originated as an animated series on Cartoon Network for 6 seasons from November 18, 1998-March 25, 2005. A feature film was released in theaters on July 3, 2002 to poor box office returns, and the series was rebooted on April 4, 2016. The series was created by Craig McCracken. Several video games and other media were also produced.
Chloe Bennet first appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and went on to voice the lead in Dreamworks’ Abominable among other projects. No official release date has been given for The CW’s PowerPuff series, nor any news on who may replace Bennet. The Illuminerdi will keep you updated on any future developments until Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup swoop in to save the City of Townsville for a new generation.
