Well, well, well, would you look at that! It seems that we have an eye for this sort of thing. Deadline has reported that a TV series based on the PlayStation’s megahit game God of War is currently under early development at Amazon Studios.
Last year, The Illuminerdi released an article on this exciting trend of games to tv series adaptation. In that article, we cited God of War as an absolute contender. Skip ahead a few months later and we have our confirmation. According to Nellie Andreeva from Deadline, the adaptation of the series will come from The Expanse creators and executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, and Wheel of Time executive producer and showrunner Rafe Judkins. Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation productions in collaboration with Amazon studios will also co-produce this series. Reps for Sony and Amazon had no comment on this breaking news.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you should know that this is not the first series from PlayStation that is being adapted as a TV series. Peacock announced last month that they will adapt a version of the high-octane, pedal to the metal destruction galore game Twisted Metal – which will most likely be an action-packed comedy starring The Falcon and The Winter Soldier‘s Anthony Mackie.
Another PlayStation greatest hit being adapted to TV is HBO Max’s The Last of Us. The horror classic will star The Mandalorian and Narcos star Pedro Pascal, and Game of Thrones Bella Ramsey. There are also other video game franchises being adapted into TV series such as Netflix’s Resident Evil, Amazon’s Mass Effect, and Paramount +’s Halo. Let’s not forget about Fallout’s TV series adaptation as well.
GOD OF WAR OFFERS AN ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF SOURCE MATERIAL
The early reports do not mention which version of the game will serve as a base for the upcoming TV series but there is plenty of source material to draw from. There are currently 7 God of War games and an 8thinstallment, called God of War: Ragnarok, which is currently under production and set to release later this year on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The series first launched in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 as the self-titled God of War.
The first installment of the game tells us a story about Kratos, a former Spartan warrior, sets out to kill the God of War Ares. Under the spell of the Greek God, Kratos murdered his family. With nothing but vengeance in his mind, he goes on a journey to avenge his loved ones and to get rid of Ares altogether. The following installments tell the story of Krato’s origin and eventually his deadly fight with the almighty Zeus.
In 2008, Santa Monica Studios released a “soft reboot” of the franchise. Years after his battles with the Greek Gods, Kratos finds himself in the Norse lands raising his son Atreus. They set out on a journey to spread the ashes of Kratos’ deceased wife on the highest peak of the land. Not only does Atreus gets to see his father in action for the first time, but he also finds out that he is also special. The sequel, Ragnarok, promises to bring more adventures and the development of Atreus’s powers. There are currently no names attached to play Kratos.
I personally can’t wait to see this come to fruition. God of War is one of my favorite games of all time. The end of the latest game blew my mind and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next. One thing is for sure: Kratos will battle another God of Thunder. Don’t forget to follow all of our social media pages so you don’t miss any upcoming exclusives! Till next time.
