A La Brava is ready to rumble! Wondercon is five days away and there are some exciting announcements, such as the annual convention introducing the first Latina superhero group in comic book history. They are known as A LA BRAVA, and it’s time you learned about them.

To all comic book lovers out there, Wondercon is featuring a new comic known as A LA BRAVA, a story about a female superhero group who happen to be Latinas. Although it features a group of Latinas portrayed as superheroes, the story goes into detail behind each member. As for the creator and writer, Kayden Phoenix, she has taken the time to explain how the story came to be.

A LA BRAVA is a universe of Latina superheroes where they have different upbrings to fight against female injustices. The story introduces the origin and social cause of the five members who are Santa, Jalisco, Loquita, Ruca, and Bandita. Each girl with abilities based on their Mexican background but as things get interesting the story also leads to the Latina hero’s uniting.

The creator and writer of A LA BRAVA, Kayden Phoenix, shared the genesis of her new tale of wonder. Phoenix mentioned she wanted to create Latina superheroes that empower and invigorate, and the brilliance of Wondercon offered her inspiration to get started. From being a Wondercon attendee to becoming a comic creator alongside her publishing company Phoenix Studios, she had a mindset for creating such a story.

“I want to create a superhero mindset for all marginalized individuals, particularly Latine,” she said.

As a Latina myself, I find it important to include representation. After all, not many Latina women are portrayed as superheroes, especially in comics. Seeing the characters of A LA BRAVA reach their full potential serves as symbolism that any Latina may also be empowered. Representation is a powerful tool on its own, but it is of course buoyed by having a genuinely interesting story connected to it. Wondercon will be the audience’s chance to learn more about that story

Phoenix is going to appear in 3 different WonderCon panels this year such as Diversity in Comics, Films, & Games; Queer Creators of Comics Assemble!; and the annual Enter the Latina Superhero. Already four origin stories of the Latina superheroes are out and it looks like the fifth superhero is still being printed which will release in May. It’s also reported that A LA BRAVA is still in progress but the comic will release this summer

Combine Phoenix’s vision with a fresh-eyed Latina artist team like acclaimed GLAAD and Eisner-nominated illustrator, Eva Cabrera (SANTA, LOQUITA) and newcomer Amanda Julina Gonzalez (JALISCO, RUCA), an uprooted New Mexican who recently graduated from Laguna College of Art and Design in Animation, and you get the history- making, invigorating art for new audiences.

JALISCO is a blade-wielding folklorico dancer that uses her culture as her weapon. SANTA, a brawler that takes down the ICE detention centers. LOQUITA, a teen detective in the supernatural world. RUCA, a vigilante serving justice. BANDITA, the gunslinger in modern day New York.

Barely getting started with the universe, four of the five origin stories are already out, with the 5th superhero being printed. Phoenix Studios’ Phase II and III are already in progress. Phoenix will be in 3 WonderCon panels this year “Diversity in Comics, Films, & Games; Queer Creators of Comics Assemble!; and the annual “Enter the Latina Superhero”.

I have a strong passion for the entertainment industry. I'm interested in films, television, theme parks, video games, and Hollywood lifestyle. I interviewed some power ranger actors and participated in podcasts for a network group I joined. From that experience, I learned how to be presentable behind the camera. Interesting fact about me is I not only have a Bolivian background but I also sing, dance, enjoy cosplay, vlog and go to comic conventions.
