The Predator film franchise is due to return with a prequel set 300 years in the past, Prey. 20th Century Studios dropped the official trailer and a new poster image this week for the upcoming action-thriller.
This is a brand-new entry in the film series from filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, The Boys).

However, unlike all the previous entries in the series, this one will not be released in theaters. It will be streaming exclusively on Hulu in the U.S. later this summer. You can check out the newest vision for the cinematic icon below:
PREY OFFERS A NEW VISION OF THE PREDATOR FILM FRANCHISE
The upcoming Predator prequel is set 300 years ago in the Comanche Nation. The story follows the young and skilled warrior Naru (Amber Midthunder). Her camp soon comes under the threat of a highly evolved alien Predator, that has come to hunt with its technically advanced arsenal. Naru seeks to protect her people and must embark on a terrifying clash with this deadly adversary.
The film stars Amber Midthunder as Naru, newcomer Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope, and Dane DiLiegro (American Horror Stories) as the film’s new Predator.

The new Prey trailer actually offers up a look at the new Predator creature for the film. The Predator monster is one of the most important elements of any of the films, and this looks to be a slightly updated, yet familiar take. The creature’s new mask looks very skull-like. It also appears to have a retractable shield. Of course, the trademark triple-dotted eyesight laser and shoulder cannon and camouflage appear to still be there.
This is a unique setting for the franchise. Fans have talked about seeing the Predator pitted against warriors of different time periods before, as it’s clear from past films that the creatures have visited Earth to conduct their hunts for many years. Setting the film 300 years in the past allows Trachtenberg the freedom to tell his own story with the Predator without having to worry too much about referencing or connecting events that take place hundreds of years later.
It also appears that Prey will bring this series back to basics. Rather than trying to clumsily expand on the lore and mythology of the franchise like The Predator did, this will bring the film series back to a cunning alien hunter stalking an outmatched group of humans. However, one lone individual is able to figure out how to outwit and challenge the creature.
Even Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch Schaefer was not able to beat the Predator in a pure strength battle. He had to strategize, outthink, and outwit the creature. He needed to set traps for it using what was available to him in the jungle. Naru’s quest to confront the feature appears to be following a similar path.

Prey arrives as a Hulu Original in the U.S. on Aug. 2. The film will be available on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star banner in all other territories.
But what did you think of the official trailer release for Prey? Is this a return to form for the Predator film franchise? Does this look like the shot in the arm the series has sorely needed or is it better left alone at this point? Let us know what you think about it on our official Twitter account.
