Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness was an absolute whirlwind of a movie, taking us on a complex journey that crossed through several different universes. WARNING: The following concept art contains spoilers for the film!

During this cosmic acid trip, we met several alternate versions of Steven Strange, and many of them faced terrible fates before the end credits rolled. One of those casualties was Defender Strange, the ponytailed version of the doctor who was escaping with America Chavez in the beginning of the film. As we know, this version of Strange tried to steal America’s powers and was ultimately killed by a demonic entity known as the “Ribbon Creature.”

Now, concept artist Ian Joyner has revealed some of the concept art for this scene on Instagram, depicting a new look at the “tragic end” of Defender Strange in Doctor Strange 2.

While not massively different from what we saw in the film, this art does give us a fresh look at the scene. Both Strange and the Ribbon Creature have a slightly different design than they did in the end product, and it’s always fascinating to see how concept art gets translated to the big screen. Check out the post below!

What’s curious about this art is that the Defender Strange variant seems to be depicted in a much more sinister way than he was in the film, making us wonder if they initially wanted this version to be more explicitly evil. If so, it’s possible that they changed his look to give the variants more variety, and not have him too closely resemble the evil “Sinister Strange” that would show up later in the movie.

The artist also notes in his post that this is a, “keyframe for the tragic end (?) of Defender Strange“, and his inclusion of the question mark is very interesting. Is he inferring that this version of Defender Strange was supposed to survive the attack in an earlier version of the script? Or is he simply referring to the fact that Defender Strange’s body would be possessed by 616 Strange later in the film?

Either way, the comment is interesting!

Ian Joyner is a professional concept artist who has also worked on such projects as Thor: Ragnarok, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, GOTG V2, Power Rangers, Suicide Squad, Bright, and Jurassic World. He has a wide array of work with an emphasis on the dark and creepy, so if this concept art interests you, you can check out his official website here!
