The official trailer to James Cameron’s highly anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water has officially dropped.

After 13 years, the sequel to the most successful film of all time is finally set to release. Avatar: The Way of Water is just a little over a month away after over a decade’s wait. Sure the original Avatar was re-released a few times, but after a movie that big, people were clamoring for more. However, it has been so long since the first movie, many have lost their fondness, and others have begun to critique the shallowness of the story and highlight the numerous tropes it follows. But everyone still praises the technological marvel that it is, and most are excited because visually, the sequel looks to take things to a whole new level.

The teaser trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water is terrible, story-wise. It does not build tension, justify the drama, or even seem interesting. Visually it looked kind of cool, but it did absolutely nothing but remind people the sequel is finally on its way. The extended preview with the new 3D glasses at D23 was fantastic! First, it showed the final scene in the teaser trailer was cut in the wrong order, so that pseudo-word-play to be a meaningful thing is actually not what is in that teaser trailer. It’s not a catchphrase, but it is way better than presented. It also reignited the wonder and magic of the world audiences experienced in the first film.

The official trailer airs on the side of the extended preview. It actually gives a look into the story. It shows that the last 13 years were more than just making a pretty picture. It shows family, exploration, and major conflict. Most of all, it shows all of it enhanced by the incredible visual spectacle that has yet to be matched by its predecessor. Avatar: The Way of Water is looking to be the continuation of the first film’s legacy and taking it to new heights and great depths. The trailer will likely win over a lot of skeptics.

That being said, I have some critiques. First, I still honestly and truly hate that teaser trailer. I got to experience the premiere of it right before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with a theater full of my fellow industry colleagues. There was no applause. Most shared the opinion that it was a terrible teaser. It was objectively bad. Second, this white kid with dreads bothers me. White people with dreads tend to bother me in general. But especially after the white savior trope of the first film, having a white kid with dreads just seems like a bad call. How do we show this white kid is in the wild? We give him dreads.

And why the hell is he not more tanned? Bronzed skin would show his affinity with nature more than dreads.

But other than that, pretty hyped for the movie.

Professional Nerd | Amateur Human | Creative/Content Director The best way to describe Kevin Fenix is the kid you never tell what the buttons do in video games so you have a chance to win. Being 6’ 4” and Asian, he never really fit in, so he got comfortable standing out. Not only is it easy to find him in crowds, he dabbles in the culinary arts, does a little stand up and improv, and can honestly say Spider-Man is the Jesus-like influence of his life. Kevin Fenix loves dogs, movies, television, comics, comedy, and to shoot people… with video.
