Poor Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Way back in January, we announced that his Disney + series had postponed production until Summer. However, although a question mark still hovers over production of many current projects due to Covid-19, we can rest assured that Disney has not forgotten old Ben.

In fact, it was announced in the last couple of days that they have hired a new writer in the form of English screenwriter and producer Joby Harold. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series looks set to still be going ahead!

Obi-Wan Kenobi, Joby Harold Is Your Only Hope

Joby Harold is perhaps best known for working with Guy Ritchie on King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. He is currently working on an upcoming Netflix project with Zack Snyder entitled Army of the Dead and an unnamed Transformers project. In the past he has worked as a producer on John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Robin Hood and Edge of Tomorrow.

With this sort of experience, hopefully Joby Harold can do the series justice. It would seem a LOT of fans are looking forward to seeing Ewan McGregor donning his Jedi robe again. With production due to begin again in January 2021 (Covid-19 dependant), Harold seems to have plenty of time to work on the script and story direction alongside the creative team.

As far as we know, the Kenobi series looks set to be 6 hour long episodes. Deborah Chow has been announced as the director for the series. We can relax knowing we are in safe hands. After all, she has done a fantastic job on the two episodes of The Mandalorian she has directed, and she has many great Television episodes under her belt including American Gods, The Man in the High Castle and Lost in Space.

Whilst plot details are kept firmly secret at the moment, we know that previous to the writer change, the series was set to explore Obi-Wan’s years in Tatooine whilst keeping an eye on a certain young farm boy. The series even has a possible working title.

Return to Tatooine?

Most importantly of course, we know that Ewan McGregor is set to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi. We all know what a great job McGregor did in the prequel series, so we know that whatever happens, he will bring the same enthusiasm and energy to the role as before.

Will the introduction of a new writer change the direction of the series or will it keep the to the focus of Tatooine? I know many Star Wars fans are eager to find out what happened during those desolate years in the deserts. Did he indeed train with Qui-Gon Jinn as suggested by Yoda? And how on earth did Obi Wan manage to age so quickly? What did he witness whilst living as a hermit in those sand dunes?! To say we at The Illuminerdi are excited for this series is seriously an understatement.

Are you looking forward to the Disney + series? Hopefully we can keep you updated with more Obi-Wan Kenobi news as soon as we hear it.
