The first trailer and poster for the horror spin-off, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, from the mind of Chris Rock makes its debut.

After eight films, the Saw franchise is poised to make an unexpected comeback. A couple of years ago, the world raised a collective eyebrow when it was announced that Chris Rock had an idea for a reboot to the series. Rock is a comedian, actor, and director, but his brand has been far from the body horror and chills associated with the Saw franchise.

The new installment is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (St. Agatha), and the screenwriting duties were handled by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, who both scripted Jigsaw. So, not only is there a solid horror team in place, the writers are intimately familiar with the material. Samuel L. Jackson joins Rock in the film, playing a veteran cop who apparently gets in over his head as well. Get your first look at the film below:

Things Spiral Out of Control

The trailer begins with the playful banter that defined Rock’s legendary stand-up career. In the spin-off, he plays Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks, a cop who seemingly hasn’t been completely hardened by his profession, yet. He and his newbie partner, William Schenk, played by Max Minghella, enjoy a light hearted moment before arriving at the crime scene that seemingly kicks the movie into gear. A cop killer is on the loose and he likes to play games.

The Spiral title is seemingly a reference to a few different themes and connections found in the larger franchise. The most obvious is the red spiral that is found on the face of Billy the puppet, the iconic doll that has defined the franchise. Secondly, it could be possible that there’s a new killer on the loose who was inspired by the terror caused by Jigsaw in previous installments. Lastly, it’s easy to assume that the plot and characters get swept up into descending spiral of terror, the deeper their investigations go. And judging by the situation that Detective Banks is forced to face at the close of the trailer, things will get brutal.

Spiral looks to be a new boarding point for fans who have not seen the previous eight installments, while offering enough Easter eggs to keep the interest of long time fans. It will be hard to avoid this film as it comes closer to its release date and we will be here to bring you the latest.
