Last night was the premiere of Disney’s live-action remake of the 1998 animated classic Mulan, which stars Liu Yifei, Gong Li, Yoson An and Donnie Yen. First reactions to the film have now begun to emerge on social media.
Though Mulan‘s production was troubled with a number of difficult controversies, the big-budget action film is finally in its home stretch, and is set to open in a few weeks. Despite initial fears that the coronavirus would keep audiences away from theaters, Mulan is reported to be tracking for an opening around $85 to $90 million, a number that will place it at the top of the box office going into April, where it will face little competition.

Social media reactions to the film have been glowing, praising Liu Yifei’s portrayal of the beloved heroine, as well as the film’s messages of female empowerment and the ways in which it distances itself from the original animated film. They also say that you won’t have time to miss the original’s iconic songs and comedic sidekicks when you’ve got the remake’s dazzling action sequences and beautiful visuals to marvel at instead.
The cast of Mulan is fantastic in the film. There are lots of little moments that nods to the animated that’ll make the fans happy. Very beautiful & epic cinematography. It had more fantastical elements than I expected. Overall, a great re-telling of the animated and very fun 🙌🏼

#Mulan is exciting, vibrant, emotional, and different from the animated version. It's definitely its own thing, which I dug – a more mature Disney film, featuring stunning production design & fight choreography. Director Niki Caro & star Liu Yifei are the big stand-outs, imo pic.twitter.com/p6IEQUDNBu

Is #Mulan the first great superhero movie of 2020? It sure feels like it. She soars over rooftops, flies across walls, shoots arrows, and is just a general badass. The film serves as a reminder to be true to yourself. Little girls are going to look up to @yifei_cc pic.twitter.com/cVVFMb07UP

#Mulan is the best of the Disney live-action remakes since Cinderella — I didn’t even miss the songs. Finds new notes in a story we already know while delivering gorgeous action, heart, and humor. Liu Yifei is 🌟💥🔥
