Cobb Vanth’s Connection To Boba Fett

The Aftermath trilogy nicely sets up the Star Wars galaxy post-Return of the Jedi. Palpatine’s contingency plan is laid out and the beginnings of the power shift within the shattered Empire begins to unfold. Cobb Vanth is a character that signifies the change of times. Jabba the Hutt is no more, and the crime syndicates have a weakened hold on Outer Rim worlds like Tatooine.

Cobb Vanth appropriates his armor from one such syndicate. The armor was salvaged by Jawas from the Dune Sea so it is highly implied, but not confirmed, that the armor is Boba Fett’s. He was last seen being consumed by monstrous bird-like beak of the Sarlac of Carkoon.

“I’m here now. Me and others like me. Bringing the law to this lawless place.”

Cobb Vanth, Star Wars: Aftermath

Cobb Vanth came from a life of slavery, hinted at by the star shaped scars that adorn his back. Such treatment likely leads to his resolve to bring about justice wherever he can. As the leader of Freetown, he works in conjunction with the Tusken Raiders to keep the crime syndicates at bay, while also enlisting Malakili, Jabba’s old game keeper, to help raise a young Huttlet that was bestowed to him. In the novels, Cobb Vanth does not shy away from violence but is often merciful insisting that his name and message be made known to those who would think to oppose him.

How Does Cobb Vanth Tie Into The Mandalorian?

Could this mysterious figure be Cobb Vanth?

At the end of the episode “The Gunslinger,” from Season One, a mysterious cloaked and spurred figure approaches the corpse of Fennec Shand, played by Ming-Na Wen, on a moonlight cliff out in the desert of Tatooine. A popular speculation amongst fans was that this was none other than Boba Fett. However, if Vanth does in fact possess Fett’s armor, it is more likely to be him.

Does Din Djarin hear of man in Mandalorian armor on Tatooine and returns to investigate? Does Boba Fett contact Din to help him reclaim what is rightfully his? The possibilities seem endless! Sound off in the comments below what you think Cobb Vanth’s role in The Mandalorian Season 2 will be!
