As movie theaters begin to reopen around the U.S., the desire of moviegoers to experience a film in the cinema has never been stronger and we have two legendary monsters to thank for that. Warner Bros’ MonsterVerse crossover Godzilla vs Kong is already a box-office hit after setting a new record for best opening day during a global pandemic.

According to a report by Deadline, Godzilla Vs Kong brought in an estimated $9.6 million domestically on opening day. The last film that held the record for the highest-grossing opening day was another WB blockbuster, Wonder Woman 1984. The DCEU sequel opened on Christmas day racking up 7.5 million in theaters and only open to 2,150 cinemas at the time. However, the MonsterVerse had the advantage that over the DC film since the film was the first title to play up to 3,000 theaters around the country.

Comparing the reception of both films, Godzilla Vs. Kong was met with strong early reviews and it is currently sitting at a 79 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, as well Cinemascore giving the film an A.

It’s worth noting that movie theaters are open with a limit capacity and it’s unknown if attendance will see an increase from its opening day. The film had a strong start and is projected to earned somewhere between $20-30 million domestically. While Godzilla Vs Kong‘s box office record isn’t the typical huge number for a blockbuster, it still goes to show that there’s still a demand to experience the film in the cinema.

Even with streaming services offering the same film on their platforms, that didn’t stop people from coming back to the big screen. Although, even with a vaccine being distributed, many viewers will be hesitant to come back to the theaters until there a sense of normality. As for some, they have become accustomed to streaming a film in the comfort of their own homes rather than facing the crowds at theaters.
