Sony Exec Teases The MCU & Spider-Man “Plan”

Sony Pictures President Sanford Panitch hinted at an MCU Spider-Man connection for future projects coming sooner than fans think.

Anyone who’s followed Sony Pictures over the past few years has seen their attempts to start a Spider-Man Cinematic Universe constantly shifting.

Movie ideas for Aunt May being a super spy, a Black Cat and Silver Sable team-up, and even a Sinister Six project have long been in the works – but the only successful Spidey spin-off was 2018’s surprise hit Venom, which saw Tom Hardy take on one of the Webhead’s most well-known villains, albeit in a more anti-heroic light.

There’s been speculation ever since then about whether or not Venom (and the other planned supervillains) would cross over with current Spider-Man Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but a quote from Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch suggests such a crossover may occur.

One Spider-Man To Unite Them All

In an interview with Variety, Panitch whet the appetite of MCU fans as follows:

“There actually is a plan. I think now maybe it’s getting a little more clear for people where we’re headed and I think when No Way Home comes out, even more will be revealed.”

Panitch’s statement isn’t the only thing fueling the fire.  The end of the trailer for Jared Leto-starring Morbius revealed Michael Keaton’s Vulture (who appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming) would be a part of that film and, by implication, link the thusly called Sony Universe of Marvel Characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, we won’t be sure who in this web of Spidey characters is connected until after the universe-bending Spider-Man: No Way Home is released, which promises to tie the MCU in with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man duology.  We’ll also have to see if Morbius or Venom: There Will Be Carnage hints at any further universe ties.  Hopefully Spider-Man’s cinematic web won’t break under all that pressure.

What are your thoughts on Sanford Panitch’s Spidey statement?  Do you want the Tom Hardy Venom films to coexist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or be separate from them?  What’s your favorite Venom comic?  Let us know in the comments below and on our Twitter.
