Acclaimed actor/writer/director Greta Gerwig brought audiences to tears in Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women, and now she’s teaming with Margot Robbie to helm the first live-action Barbie movie. Gerwig initially signed on as a writer to the long-gestating project in 2019, and was recently confirmed as director per Collider. The film will start shooting sometime in 2022.
You may vaguely remember the internet uniting in disbelief a few years back when Amy Schumer seemed poised to bring Mattel’s mascot to the screen, only to drop out some time after. Anne Hathaway was briefly involved at some point during production, but also dropped out.
Details On The Live-Action Barbie Movie
Margot Robbie has been a versatile performer as well as a consistent box-office draw since her breakout role in 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street, while Gerwig had back-to-back box-office smashes with Lady Bird in 2017 and Little Women two years later. If that wasn’t enough to grab your attention, the involvement of Oscar-nominated writer/director Emmerald Fennell (who exploded onto the Hollywood scene with last year’s Promising Young Woman) should.

Though we don’t have any plot details yet, Robbie hinted we could be in for something great last year. Robbie explained the Barbie film would be “something totally different-the thing didn’t know you wanted”. Robbie, Fennel, and Gerwig have each proven themselves as very distinctive creators, so I’m excited to see what they have in store for the Barbie property.
Gerwig will next appear co-starring with Adam Driver in the thriller White Noise, whereas Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn for James Gunn’s reboot/sequel The Suicide Squad and Fennell co-wrote DC’s upcoming Zatanna film.
