With James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad almost here, fans of DC’s supervillains are excited for them to return to the big screen – except for Will Smith’s Deadshot.

Sadly, the first Suicide Squad film received mixed to negative review from critics and was considered a box office failure from the studio. However, it did gain warm reception from many fans and became a pop culture classic in the superhero film genre. It helped popularize Harley Quinn further in the mainstream audience and made Margot Robbie a global superstar.

When it was announced that another Suicide Squad would happen, fans were expecting the return of Smith’s Deadshot. However it’s sad to say that the A-List superstar will not be reprising his role in the upcoming film.

Now first of fans should note that the upcoming Suicide Squad film is not really a sequel to the first Suicide Squad film that premiered in 2016. But rather a spiritual reboot film that has new faces and some old characters returning from the original film.

Having almost all of the old characters and continuing their storyline seemed unlikely, mainly because it will focus on a new storyline and scrap the continuation of its predecessor. However Producer Peter Safran did acknowledged that the studio consider bringing back Will Smith in reprising his role as Deadshot.

Safran explained that “As the story goes, this new The Suicide Squad will have nothing “tangible” to connect it to the previous film according to the producer”. “We just don’t address it any tangible form,” Safran said. He explained that  “Yes, they’re the characters, the actors that played them in the first movie. But we really wanted to make sure that this stands on its own two feet. So again, it’s not a sequel, but there are some characters that were in the first movie, right? So it’s not really a full reboot either. We just call it James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.”

According to Safran’s statement, Will Smith’s Deadshot was considered in returning, but with Gunn’s vision and the studio’s new direction, the character would not have fit in the upcoming film’s storyline. However who knows if Gunn’s soft reboot of Suicide Squad proves successful, we could potentially see the return of Smith’s Deadshot in the DC Extended Film Universe.

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will premiere In August 6, 2021 simultaneously on HBO Max and Movie Cinemas in the United States. The film will star Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, and Peter Capaldi. The film is produced by Charles Roven and Peter Safran. James Gunn will serve as Director and Writer. Suicide Squad will be distributed by Warner Bros. Studios.
