International airings for Power Rangers Dino Fury have begun and fans are getting their first look at some of the new episodes. One of those episodes, The Matchmaker, reveals Izzy, the Green Ranger, as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

The episode follows the Black Ranger, trying to set his sister, Izzy, up on a date with a boy he thinks she likes named Adrian. Near the end of the episode we find out that she didn’t actually have feelings for Adrian, but for her friend, Fern, featured in a previous episode.

Power Rangers Dino Fury’s Significance In Kids Programming

Power Rangers now joins the list of very few live-action children’s television shows to feature a main LGBTQ+ character. Other shows like this include the Disney Channel’s Andi Mack and The Lodge.

While this is the first time an LGBTQ+ character has been featured in the show, Power Rangers has had LGBTQ+ characters featured in other mediums such as the comics or the 2017 movie.

This isn’t the first time Power Rangers Dino Fury has been progressive in representing the character of Izzy either. In her introduction episode, New Recruits, Izzy takes off her skirt citing, “Skirts aren’t really my thing”, showing young girls that they don’t need to wear skirts to be feminine in today’s society.

This is not something that the show had to do because, in the show’s source material, Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger, Izzy’s character was played by a man. This is why the character isn’t seen with a skirt in the Japanese footage. When Hasbro decided to have the character be played by a woman they decided to use this as a fun lesson for young girls.
