Could the iconic Jim Carrey be joining the MCU?

While Marvel Studios is confirmed to be expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe in big, big ways over the next two years also, the franchise is far from the end of its incredible run of storytelling. With projects confirmed to be in development, like Captain America 4 and Deadpool 3, along with unconfirmed entries like The Mutants and various new Disney+ series, the most successful franchise in cinematic history is showing no signs of slowing down for years to come.

With so many huge projects coming throughout the 2020s, Marvel is going to be as busy as ever in the casting department for dozens of new roles that will need to be filled. Particularly once 2021 comes to a close with big-time outings like Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home, not to mention Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld’s Hawkeye on Disney+, Marvel will have its work cut out to continue into Phases 4 and 5 with a new round of stars and icons.

While plenty of major names will come into play on the side of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as the MCU progresses, the villainous side will also need its fair share of power players, which is already starting to come to fruition in Phase 4. From Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to Jonathan Majors as He Who Remains/Kang the Conqueror, amongst countless others, the MCU has some potentially major new additions in store that could play a role in more than just one project.

Another important aspect of the MCU’s future to take into account is the Multiverse after it was first truly introduced in Loki, with more exploration on the way in movies like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. While Kang is certainly at the top of the villain ladder in this regard, rumors are pointing to another exciting antagonist from Marvel Comics making his long-awaited debut. On top of the character himself, there may even be an actor attached to the role, and a comedy icon at that.

The moderator team on the Marvel Studios Spoilers subreddit, as discovered by The Direct, revealed a rumor that comedy legend Jim Carrey has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the classic Marvel villain MODOK. The leak also hinted that Carrey is already in line for multiple appearances throughout the MCU’s Phase 4.

The character may come into play as early as She-Hulk, which is set to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2022. Additionally, the rumor teases that MODOK is also scheduled to play a role in 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, although that information remains unverified at the moment.

Jim Carrey is known as one of the great comedy stars of the modern era with classic ’90s hits like The Mask and both Ace Ventura movies on his impressive resume. He even has a quick run in the world of comic book movies with his portrayal of the Riddler in 1995’s Batman Forever alongside Val Kilmer and Tommy Lee Jones, although it’s regarded as quite the forgettable Batman movie.

Jim Carrey has even gone through something of a resurgence in recent years, excelling in the role of Doctor Robotnik in 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog with his classic brand of hilarity. Now, even after a career most actor could only dream of, the Canadian comedian could be in for potentially the most high-profile role of his acting life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,

As for Jim Carrey’s rumored role, MODOK is a character that’s actually been rumored to arrive in the MCU for quite some time. Early drafts of 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp included the former AIM-scientist-turned-robotic-super-genius, and after AIM was introduced in 2013’s Iron Man 3, MODOK certainly has an avenue to use for an MCU debut.

Originally debuting as a Captain America villain, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson could very well be in line to take on MODOK in the unscheduled Captain America 4 currently in development. No matter what happens though, Jim Carrey looks to be in line for an extended run with Marvel Studios, adding substantially to his legacy in Hollywood.
