Sonic 3 is officially happening! Our favorite hedgehog remains true to his saying, “got to go fast.” He isn’t slowing for down for anyone and neither is Paramount or Sega. They’ve given the green light for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (Sonic 3) and a spin-off series for Knuckles, coming exclusively to Paramount Plus.
Months ahead of the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 is already in development. President and CEO of Paramount Pictures & Nickelodeon, Brian Robbins made this announcement during Paramount’s Investor Event.
Sonic 3 is Officially Happening
The Sonic the Hedgehog film series is based on the beloved video game franchise from Sega. The series follows the adventures of the world’s fastest blue hedgehog as he dashes to perform heroic deeds across the world and face off against the outlandish Dr. Robotnik and other villains. The Sonic franchise has become a massive IP spanning a plethora of video games, animated series, and graphic novels.
There’s only one live-action film thus far but the Sonic universe is just getting started making its mark on the theatrical world. The 2020 movie was a huge success all around especially at the box office grossing over $300 million and getting its sequel greenlit in a mere number of months after its release.
Paramount’s 2020 Sonic The Hedgehog movie starred Ben Schwartz as the voice of the titular blue spiky protagonist, Jim Carrey eccentric as ever as Dr. Robotnik, and James Marsden as Sonic’s human companion who helps him out over the course of the film. The upcoming sequel is set to add two fan-favorite characters, with Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Sonic’s fox friend Miles “Tails” Prower and, to everyone’s surprise, Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna.
While not much more official news on Sonic 3 has been given by Paramount, Sonic fans should be thrilled by how enthusiastic the people at Paramount seem about the film. The Sega Corporation’s CEO, Haruki Satomi, had this to say about Sonic 3:
“We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed. We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them. 2022 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise with the second film being released this April, as well as Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated video game title, coming this holiday.
Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come”
Additionally, Neal H. Moritz, a producer on the previous two films, weighed in about what can expect of the third film:
“The world of Sonic the Hedgehog has been capturing imaginations for decades, and we are thrilled to stretch the limits of what this franchise is capable of with world-class offerings both on the big screen and for Sonic fans at home. The sky is truly the limit, and I am immensely proud to be part of creating new Sonic content for longtime fans as well as introducing Sonic to a new generation”
“Do I look like I need your movie?”
Wait a minute, you didn’t think I was done, did you? Just remember, I did mention Knuckles getting his own show too. Idris Elba, one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars is coming back to introduce his Knuckles in more ways than one. Elba will be making his debut as Knuckles The Echidna in Sonic The Hedgehog 2, then he’ll headline his own spin-off in a live-action Knuckles series coming to Paramount Plus, sometime in 2023.
We don’t know much about the Knuckles series, other than the aforementioned details, of course.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 will race into theaters on April 8.
