Sony unveils the first look at the Sony PSVR2 for the PlayStation 5!
On Feb 22, 2022, Sony and Playstation officially revealed the future of VR gaming in the presence of the “Playstation VR2 (PSVR2), which will be a companion and accessory to the Playstation 5. To note, the VR2 looks like a significant upgrade from its predecessor, and it seems Sony is sticking with the sleek white branding that the PS5 is currently using. One thing to note is the PSVR2 headset has a similar shape as the PS Dual Sense controller.

Both are unique in style by going with an “orb look,” a vast departure from its competition’s goggles approach, which the Oculus and other VR headsets utilize. However, Hideaki Nishino Senior Vice President, Platform Experience did explain, “The circular orb shape represents the 360-degree view that players feel when they enter the virtual reality world, so this shape captures it nicely,” explained Nishino. Meaning it seems Sony wants to incorporate growth and human cognition into each of its products for the flagship console of the modern era.
In addition to the PSVR2 coming with a variety of new features, it seems the design is efficient and will support constant human contact giving the player a sense of adaptability and growth to fit the needs and style of each individual. Meaning no playstyle will ever be the same. To note, Sony has each PS5 controller equipped with “dual sense” triggers which help recreate a sense of visceral gaming that lures the player into feeling our worlds are slowly becoming one. Nishino further explained that Sony did feel the PSVR2 should be centered and feel “inspired by the look of the family of PS5 products.”

It makes sense with the hardware being at its height and never better than before. From the instant load times with the SSD (Solid State Drive) or running every title at either 30 FPS movie quality ray tracing, many enjoy the performance modes options at 60 FPS, solidifying a smoother and fast-paced gaming experience.
Of course, the PSVR2 will stand on its own compared to its competition. Due to an adjustable scope attached to the headset, which places the scope area closer or further away from the face. Also, the placement of the stereo headphone jack remains the same to ensure a smooth sense of familiarity can be felt for the player. Sony added a new vent design for the PSVR2 headset that they “feel players will enjoy it.”
Speaking on the inclusion of the vent design is Yujin Morisawa, Senior Art Director at SIE.
“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games.
I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.”

It seems that the future of Playstation is bright and consistent in evolution going forward, and it feels all signs are pointing to monumental change in the landscape of gaming and the realm of VR once the PSVR2 is officially released to the public. Sony added,
“There are plenty of exciting new features to look forward to in the PS VR2 system, including stunning visual fidelity in 4K HDR and state-of-art graphical rendering, enhanced tracking such as inside-out camera tracking, new PlayStation VR2 Sense Technology features such as headset feedback, and the new, intuitive PS VR2 Sense controller that creates an incredibly deep feeling of immersion.”
As of now, no release date for the PS VR2 has been officially announced by Sony did reveal PS VR 2 development kits are already in the hands of game creators currently serving as beta testers to relay critical and vital feedback. According to a recent report from Bloomberg, the expected release window for PlayStation VR 2 is Holiday 2022.
