The Hunger Games fans rejoice! The prequel of one of the most beloved book series, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, has finally got a teaser trailer.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a prequel to The Hunger Games Trilogy that was first released as a book back in 2020 by The Hunger Games author, Suzanne Collins. The story follows a young 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, who, eventually becomes the tyrannical President of Panem during the original Hunger Games Trilogy. He becomes a mentor during the 10th annual Hunger Games to District 12 tribute, Lucy Gray Baird.
Friendship, love and betrayal have captivated readers and movie audiences, despite the book getting mixed reviews from critics, the story ultimately received positive reviews. The franchise has garnered nearly $3 billion US dollars and skyrocketed the careers of many of its stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth. Regardless of what the critics think, the franchise is a booming success with a hungry audience. Thankfully that’s where The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes fits right in.

The teaser for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes doesn’t show very much but it does show a snow-covered bird and snake who are frozen in time on a branch. As the camera pans around these two creatures, the icicles begin to melt, revealing their gold bodies, ultimately leading the snake to attack the bird. It’s a very snake thing to do and fits perfectly into the whole motif. Throughout the clip, these words tease what’s to come: “You’re invited to return to the Games in 2023. The world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake.”
Going from what we know of The Hunger Games story, it isn’t a far stretch to think that Coriolanus Snow is the snake in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Which will likely mean that Lucy Gray Baird is the Songbird which will likely lead, influence and inspire what eventually becomes the Mockingjay.
In 2021, it was revealed by Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chairman Joe Drake, that the film was in pre-production with filming to be expected to start in early 2022. In early May, we reported that Billy The Kid‘s Tom Blyth as the young Coriolanus Snow and earlier this month, West Side Story‘s Rachel Zegler will play Lucy Gray Baird.

Catching Fire and both Mockingjay films’ director Francis Lawrence is set to direct the upcoming prequel with Hunger Games producers Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson. Lawrence has spoken fondly about both Zegler and Blyth in their roles, stating that Blyth will “show us all the complex ambiguities” as Snow and Zegler is perfect for the role of Gray Baird since “the character is bold, independent, and defiant, but also vulnerable, emotional, and loving.”
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set for release in theaters on November 17, 2023. You can watch the teaser trailer above!
