PLAYSTATION DELIVERS THE NEWEST STORY TRAILER FOR GOD OF WAR: RAGNAROK

Picking up after the events of 2018’s God of War, Ragnarok continues the story of the Spartan Warrior and former God of War of Mount Olympus, Kratos, and his son Atreus. Atreus seeks knowledge and to understand the prophecy of “Loki,” his original name, as Kratos struggles to free himself from the sins of his past and be the father that his son needs.

However, in Ragnarok, they are challenged by the forces of Asgard, and Kratos appears to be on a collision course with Thor, the God of Thunder. Kratos is desperate to protect Atreus, but Atreus wishes to protect his father as well, which causes conflict between the duo.

The new story trailer looks very exciting as it appears Ragnarok will deliver on events that were set up and teased by the previous game. Freya is back, and it looks like she is still grief-stricken by the loss of Baldur in the previous game, and it appears Kratos and Atreus will be the objects of her vengeance to quench her anguish.

Also, it looks like Kratos will at least clash weapons with Thor, who will more than likely be unwilling to forgive Kratos for the death of his eldest son Magni, who Kratos killed in the last game. Meanwhile, Atreus was the one who ended up killing off Thor’s other son Modi, who Thor blamed for Magni’s death and called Modi a coward over it.

Additionally, the trailer also shows what appears to be the first obscured look at Odin in the games. The trailer also features multiple voice-over lines of dialogue by actor Richard Schiff (The West Wing, Man of Steel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever). Odin and Thor did not fully or directly appear in the last God of War game, but their presence was constantly felt throughout the narrative. Now, it looks like fans will finally get the chance to see Kratos physically confront these iconic mythological characters.

Schiff as Odin is definitely an interesting casting choice. It is not what was initially expected, but Odin still sounds intimidating and commanding. It appears Odin will challenge Kratos on the meaning of godhood as well as bringing Kratos’ past sins to light once again, referring to him as a “monster who kills without cause.” That is ignoring Odin’s own transgressions that were depicted over the course of the 2018 God of War, showing Odin as the cause of a great deal of death, destruction, and suffering.

God of War: Ragnarok - still 2

Not to mention, it appears Kratos and Atreus form an alliance with Týr, the Norse God of War. At the very least, players finally getting to face off with Thor should be a fun experience, since it was a narrative element that was left out of the last game. The benefit is that the wait and payoff will be that much more anticipated and bigger when Ragnarok finally comes out.

In addition to the new story trailer, Sony PlayStation also revealed that a limited edition God of War: Ragnarok DualSense wireless controller will also hit the shelves in November. Pre-orders on the specially designed controller start on September 27. The reveal trailer for the new controller is available here:

God of War: Ragnarok finally arrives on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on Nov. 9. But what did you think of the new story trailer for Ragnarok?
