The SAG Awards Nominations are just around the corner. Perfect time to predict which actors might be in the running for the prestigious award.
This is a big week for awards pundits. The Golden Globes are back with their televised ceremony and plenty of smaller critics circles will also announce their winners. The Directors and Producers Guild Awards will also announce their nominations, both being important indicators of the current state of the Oscar race.
The same can be said about the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards, as this is the first voter overlap between precursor awards and the Oscars. That means people that vote for the SAGs also vote for the Academy Awards. But as the name probably indicates the SAG Awards are only featuring acting categories: 5 to be precise. One of the is the important SAG ensemble award, which in the past often decided if films make it into the Academy Awards’ Best Picture line-up or not.

So, without further ado let’s jump right into my predictions for the SAG Awards Film nominations:
FILM ENSEMBLE
My Predictions: Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fablemans, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Top Gun: Maverick
While the first three seem like obvious picks, the latter two have a lot of competition. Glass Onion has one of this year’s most celebrated ensembles, with everyone having another favorite, so it seems likely that they will be nominated. Now Top Gun: Maverick might be a less standard prediction. But just looking at the cast list and what the actors had to do in the film and the fact that it is one of the most beloved films of the year, I feel like this could surprise here.
FILM ACTOR
My Predictions: Brendan Fraser – The Whale, Austin Butler – Elvis, Colin Farrell – The Banshees of Inisherin, Bill Nighy – Living, Tom Cruise – Top Gun: Maverick
No real surprises here. We very well could be looking at the Oscar 5 (which the SAGs also correctly nominated last year). Watch out for Hugh Jackman and Paul Mescal though.
FILM ACTRESS
My Predictions: Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Cate Blanchett – Tár, Danielle Deadwyler – Till, Michelle Williams – The Fablemans, Viola Davis – The Woman King

Also, no real surprise here. The fifth spot has high competition with Babylon’s Margot Robbie, and we also might have to look out for Ana De Armas (Blonde), who scored a surprise Golden Globe nomination and was shortlisted for the BAFTAS.
FILM SUPPORTING ACTOR
My Predictions: Ke Huy Quan – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Brendan Gleeson – The Banshees of Inisherin, Judd Hirsch – The Fablemans, Barry Keoghan – The Banshees of Inisherin, Brian Tyree Henry – Causeway
We got the obvious two in Quan and Gleeson, but the rest of the category is surprisingly open, I left Paul Dano out in favor of Barry Keoghan, who I feel like build a lot of steam over the last few weeks, where The Fabelmans stumbled more and more. I also included one more surprising pick with Brian Tyree Henry as the SAGs mostly have one every year (last year it was Cate Blanchett in Supporting Actress for Nightmare Alley).
FILM SUPPORTING ACTRESS
My Predictions: Angela Basset – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Kerry Condon – The Banshees of Inisherin, Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Janelle Monáe – Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Stephanie Hsu – Everything Everywhere All at Once
Now this category is still wide open and the SAGs are supposed to bring some clearance into the picture. Most notably my predictions don’t include any cast members of Women Talking, which lost a lot of steam over the last few weeks but might get back up here.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations will be announced on January 11, 2023.
