Back in March 2023 Deadline officially broke the news that Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is adapting the iconic novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley for Netflix. Alongside that Deadline mentioned that he has met all three of his now confirmed cast, but at that time there weren’t any official offers, but all were on board to star.
Deadline also mentioned that he was still working on the script, although one can expect that he might have been able to finish it before the Writers’ strike a few months later.
THE FRANKENSTEIN’S MONSTER HAS AWAKENED
Now What’s on Netflix was able to officially reveal who these three talented actors are playing. According to the outlet, Oscar Isaac has been cast as The Monster, while Andrew Garfield will be playing Dr. Frankenstein. Mia Goth has joined the cast as the Bride of Frankenstein.
Del Toro has also announced in a recent interview that Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Bastards, Django Unchained) has joined the cast, but his role has yet to be revealed. He also starred in Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio.
Oscar Isaac is best known for portraying Poe Dameron in the most recent Star Wars trilogy. He has also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Moon Knight, played the villainous Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse, and voiced Spider-Man 2099 in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. But the actor is also known for his work on acclaimed films like Ex Machina, Dune, and Drive. He was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the limited series Scenes from a Marriage.
Andrew Garfield is best known for playing Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise and has since then also played the part in the movie event that was Spider-Man: No Way Home. The actor also has multiple Oscar nominations under his belt for his roles in Hacksaw Ridge and Tick, Tick… Boom!. He most recently earned an Emmy nomination for his work on the limited series Under the Banner of Heaven.
Mia Goth is currently on the way to becoming a horror icon for her roles in X, Pearl, and the upcoming MaXXine. She also just recently starred in Infinity Pool and has joined the cast of the upcoming MCU Blade film.
Guillermo Del Toro is coming right off the heels of delivering one of 2022 finest films with his adaptation of Pinocchio. The stop-motion animated film has an all-star voice cast and went on to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature alongside multiple other accolades during the last awards season.
But the writer/director has many more incredible films under his belt. Pan’s Labyrinth is still being hailed as one of the best films of the 2000s and Del Toro won multiple Oscars for The Shape of Water, including Best Director and Best Picture. His latest live-action film, Nightmare Alley also scored a Best Picture nomination. Del Toro is also known for the beloved Hellboy duology, Blade 2 and Pacific Rim.
With the SAG-AFTRA strikes still going, because studios aren’t willing to pay their actors fairly, it is still up in the air, when the project starts filming. According to Del Toro, he is aiming to start filming in February 2024, but this could very well change. In an interview with Collider, he stated:
“I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it. It’s Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and we’re working on it.”
I am very much looking forward to this film. The cast is simply amazing, and this story is right up Del Toro’s alley. This could become something special.
