Now that the Golden Globes nominations have been announced, it’s time for some early predictions. Who will go home with a trophy?
After the un-televised ceremony last year, which happened due to a lot of incidents around the Hollywood Foreign Press Academy, the Golden Globes are back. After a bunch of changes at the institute and adding of more than a hundred new members, the Golden Globes are back to being televised.
On December 12, 2022, the HFPA announced the nominees for the Film and Television categories, roughly a month before the winner ceremony on January 10, 2023. That makes it the perfect time to take a look at the freshly announced nominees and predict who will take home a trophy during the evening.

For this article we focus on the Film categories and without further ado, let’s take a look at the nominees (those are ranked in alphabetical order, with my predicted winners stated below):
DRAMA FILM
Nominees: Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Top Gun: Maverick, Tár
Predicted Winner: This category is surprisingly wide open and it’s pretty hard to predict. But I’ll go with Top Gun: Maverick as it’s THE film of 2022 and I’d imagine that there are enough people who have it as their favorite film of the year. That includes members of the HFPA.
MUSICAL/COMEDY FILM
Nominees: Babylon, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Glass Onion, Triangle of Sadness, The Banshees of Inisherin
Predicted Winner: Even though The Banshees of Inisherin overperformed with incredible 8 nominations, I still think Everything Everywhere All at Once will take home the trophy, but it could become a closer race than we think.
ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Nominees: Austin Butler – Elvis, Brendan Fraser – The Whale, Hugh Jackman – The Son, Bill Nighy – Living, Jeremy Pope – The Inspection
Predicted Winner: This award will be a race between Butler and Fraser. While The Whale is having a slow resurgence Elvis is stronger than ever, so I expect Austin Butler to win his first Golden Globe.
ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
RELATED: FINAL GOLDEN GLOBES TV WINNER PREDICTIONS: JANUARY 2023
Nominees: Ana De Armas – Blonde, Cate Blanchett – Tár, Olivia Colman – Empire of Light, Viola Davis – The Woman King, Michelle Williams – The Fabelmans
Predicted Winner: People are still upset about Danielle Deadwyler’s snub for her performance in Till, but with Michelle Yeoh competing in another category, it is pretty safe to assume that frontrunner Cate Blanchett will win here.
ACTOR IN A MUSICAL/COMEDY
Nominees: Diego Calva – Babylon, Daniel Craig – Glass Onion, Adam Driver – White Noise, Colin Farell – The Banshees of Inisherin, Ralph Fiennes – The Menu
Predicted Winner: It’s Colin Farell. There seems to be no real competition here, considering the overperformance of his film and his status as a potential Oscar frontrunner.
ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL/COMEDY
Nominees: Anya Taylor-Joy – The Menu, Lesley Manville – Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, Margot Robbie – Babylon, Emma Thompson – Good Luck to you Leo Grande, Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All at Once
Predicted Winner: With Yeoh and Blanchett competing in different categories it is very safe to assume that both Oscar frontrunner, will win their respective categories here.
SUPPORTING ACTOR
Nominees: Brendon Gleeson – The Banshees of Inisherin, Barry Keoghan – The Banshees of Inisherin, Ke Huy Quan – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Eddie Redmayne – The Good Nurse, Brad Pitt – Babylon
Predicted Winner: This will be a race between Quan and Gleeson and I think it’s safe to assume that Ke Huy Quan has this in the bag.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Nominees: Angela Basset – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Kerry Condon – The Banshees of Inisherin, Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Dolly De Leon –Triangle of Sadness, Carey Mulligan – She Said
Predicted Winner: This is probably the most open category of the evening. As for the winner, you could make a case for anyone, but I’ll go on a limb and say Angela Basset will win the Award. Jamie Lee Curtis or Kerry Condon might be the safer picks, but I have the feeling that this category could surprise us.
DIRECTOR
Nominees: James Cameron – Avatar: The Way of Water, Daniels (Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan) – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Baz Luhrman – Elvis, Martin McDonagh – The Banshees of Inisherin, Steven Spielberg – The Fabelmans
Predicted Winner: This is one of the most interesting categories of the night. While Spielberg has been the frontrunner for a long time, The Fabelmans started missing key nominations most notably did Spielberg not even make it into the BAFTA shortlist. Looking at alternatives I think James Cameron could take home the win here as Avatar: The Way of Water is still the talk of the town, and we don’t even have to talk about the incredible things Cameron pulled off with the film.
SCREENPLAY
Nominees: Everything Everywhere All at Once, Tár, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fablemans, Women Talking
Predicted Winner: This category will most likely be a face-off between Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin. As for who is winning, I think with the sheer love for the latter film, Banshees could succeed over its competitor.
ANIMATED FEATURE
Nominees: Inu-Oh, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Turning Red, Pinocchio, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
Predicted Winner: This award is Pinocchio’s to lose.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Nominees: All Quiet on the Western Front, Argentina, 1985, Close, Decision to Leave, RRR
Predicted Winner: With the huge love for RRR I would be surprised if anything else succeeds here.
ORIGINAL SCORE
Nominees: Babylon, Pinocchio, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, Women Talking
Predicted Winner: While I really loved the score of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, I think this one goes to Justin Hurwitz for Babylon.
SONG
RELATED: GLORIOUS GOLDEN GLOBES 2023 FILM WINNER PREDICTIONS: DECEMBER 2022
Nominees: Carolina – Where the Crawdads Sing, Ciao Papa – Pinocchio, Hold My Hand – Top Gun: Maverick, Lift Me Up – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Naatu Naatu – RRR
Predicted Winner: When I predict Top Gun: Maverick for Picture, I feel like Lady Gaga’s song will just win with it as a nice package. But I could see a surprise win for RRR here.
The Golden Globes take place on January 10, 2023.
