SAG Awards

The Screen Actors Guild just announced their nominations. the 29th Annual SAG Awards. It’s time to take a first glance and the nominations for this year’s award ceremony.

This is a big week for awards pundits. The Golden Globes are back with their televised ceremony and plenty of smaller critics circles will also announce their winners. The Directors and Producers Guild Awards will also announce their nominations, both being important indicators of the current state of the Oscar race.

The same can be said about the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards, as this is the first voter overlap between precursor awards and the Oscars. That means people that vote for the SAGs also vote for the Academy Awards. But as the name probably indicates the SAG Awards are only featuring acting categories: Five to be precise.

One of the most important awards is the SAG Ensemble Award, which in the past often decided if films make it into the Academy Awards’ Best Picture lineup or not. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into the nominations for the SAG Awards Film categories:

SAG AWARDS – BEST FILM ENSEMBLE

The Banshees of Inisherin

Nominees: Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fablemans, Babylon, Women Talking

The nominations of Babylon and Women Talking definitely are some kind of lifeline for these films as they have been losing a lot of steam over the last few weeks.

ACTOR

Elvis

Nominees: Brendan Fraser – The Whale, Austin Butler – Elvis, Colin Farrell – The Banshees of Inisherin, Bill Nighy – Living, Adam Sandler – Hustle

The biggest surprise of these categories is Adam Sandler’s nomination. This might put his foot in the door to getting an Oscar nomination, Tom Cruise missed another nomination after his miss at the Globes.

ACTRESS

Everything Everywhere All at Once

Nominees: Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Cate Blanchett – Tár, Danielle Deadwyler – Till, Ana De Armas – Blonde, Viola Davis – The Woman King

Ana De Armas’ nomination here is a huge get for her. This might have secured her first Oscar nomination, as she was nominated at the Golden Globes, here at SAG, and was short-listed for the BAFTAs. Also, Michelle Williams’ missing is a big loss for her, but it shouldn’t put her in danger of missing the Oscar nomination.

SUPPORTING ACTOR

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Nominees: Ke Huy Quan – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Brendan Gleeson – The Banshees of Inisherin, Paul Dano – The Fablemans, Barry Keoghan – The Banshees of Inisherin, Eddie Redmayne – The Good Nurse

Eddie Redmayne’s nomination is probably the biggest surprise here, even though one could have seen that coming after his Golden Globe nomination. It’s interesting to see that only Paul Dano got in, which could indicate which actor from The Fablemans could show up at the Oscars.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS

BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER

Nominees: Angela Basset – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Kerry Condon – The Banshees of Inisherin, Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All at Once, Hong Chau – The Whale, Stephanie Hsu – Everything Everywhere All at Once

Not that many surprises other than the notable snub of Janelle Monáe for her work in Glass Onion. Therefore Hong Chau got in, which is a huge boost for her Oscar chances. The same thing can be said for Stephanie Hsu.

STUNT ENSEMBLE

Avatar: The Way Of Water

Nominees: Avatar: The Way of Water, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Top Gun: Maverick, The Woman King

A category I did not predict in my previous predictions features was Stunt Ensemble. The nominations are fairly expected. This should be Top Gun: Maverick‘s award to lose.
