Millennium Media is moving forward with its next reboot of the Hellboy film franchise, and they’ve now reportedly found their lead for the upcoming reboot, Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Deadline reports that actor Jack Kesy (Deadpool 2, 12 Strong, The Strain) has been cast in the eponymous role as production moves forward.

The upcoming reboot is slated to begin shooting soon. Mike Mignola, who created the character, is onboard and co-writing the script for the latest reboot.

JACK KESY CAST AS HELLBOY FOR UPCOMING REBOOT

Kesy previously appeared in Marvel’s Deadpool 2 as Black Tom. His other film credits include Claws and Baywatch. He also appears in Lionsgate’s Dark Web: Cicadia 3301 opposite Jack Reacher star Alan Ritchson. Deadline also notes that additional casting is in the works for the upcoming reboot. Shooting is expected to commence in the coming months.

The upcoming reboot will see the paranormal detective of the Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense (BPRD) stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia with a rookie BPRD agent. While there, they find a community that’s being haunted by witches and led by a local devil with an unsettling connection to Hellboy’s past. The devil is called the Crooked Man. Brian Taylor (Crank) is directing the project based on a script by Hellboy comic creator Mike Mignola and Chris Golden.

Speaking on the news Millennium Media Co-President Jonathan Yunger commented, “Jack Kesy is a dynamic actor who has the ability to morph into his roles. His talent and stature are perfect for this younger Hellboy. I was very impressed with him while working together on The Outpost.”

The project is the first film as part of Millnnium’s development slate with German film and TV distributor, Telepool, which is owned by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. Kesy’s other featured roles include Sgt. Josh Kirk in The Outpost, and the role of Thunder in Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse alongside Michael B. Jordan. His other upcoming film roles also include Sheroes and the Netflix feature, The Killer.

Kesy will be the latest actor to portray the character. Ron Perlman portrayed the demon detective in the 2004 film and its 2008 sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, both directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. Perlman also voiced the character in two animated films, Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms and also Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron.

In 2019, Millennium Media tried its first attempt at a cinematic Hellboy reboot, which starred Stranger Things’ David Harbour. It also starred Ian McShane as Professor Broom and Milla Jovovich as Nimue. The film was a flop, grossing only $55 million worldwide off of a $50 million budget. The film did not fare well with critics either, scoring 17% on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the previous reboot failed, it looks like Millennium Media is still giving it another shot. The previous Hellboy movies from Guillermo del Toro were only modest successes, but they received critical acclaim, and they are beloved by fans. It remains to be seen how this new iteration turns out.

What do you think of the news? Do you like the casting of Jack Kesy as Hellboy? What do you make of the latest reboot of the franchise?
