The Flash: Teddy Sears Had No Idea He Was In DC’s Crazy 2023 Movie

Teddy Sears from CW's Flash was as shocked as everyone else to his see his Jay Garrick in The Flash movie.

Actor Teddy Sears, known for portraying Hunter Zolomon/Zoom in The CW’s The Flash television series, has clarified initial reports of his appearance in The Flash film.

In The Flash film, a sequence occurs when both versions of Barry Allen and Dark Flash, all three portrayed by Ezra Miller, witness multiple universes literally colliding because of their actions. One retro-themed universe is glimpsed, depicting the classic George Reeves incarnation of Superman and the Jay Garrick of that universe. At a glance, the Jay Garrick of this universe looks extremely similar to Sears, with a slightly different costume.

Responding to online speculation about his presumed appearance in a recent interview, Sears said “I mean, I’m sleep-deprived with a newborn at home, so my memory is a little foggy. But I’m pretty sure I would’ve remembered shooting a major DC Studios film.” Sears reaffirmed this statement by saying “Sadly, I’m not in this.”

In The Flash television series from 2014, Teddy Sears portrayed Hunter Zolomon/Zoom, the main evil speedster of Season 2. Zolomon masqueraded as Jay Garrick, a variant of The Flash in the grand DC Multiverse. Jay Garrick is typically The Flash of Earth-2 in the comics, fighting in that universe’s World War II. He actually predated the more popular Barry Allen version of the character, debuting in 1940. Despite not appearing in The Flash film, actor John Wesley Shipp played the actual Jay Garrick in The Flash television series.

The Lingering Mystery Behind Teddy Sears’ “Jay Garrick”

As whoever briefly played Jay Garrick in The Flash film was left uncredited in the final product, there’s still a mystery regarding who or what played Jay Garrick. One possibility is that the character was simply a CGI creation, as basically every character in that sequence was, besides the three Barry Allens. The CGI creation could’ve just been animated with Sears’ likeness in mind, which does raise concerns about Sears’ lack of consent for his likeness being used. While The Flash uses CGI to bring back deceased actors, this could be an instance where it’s done to basically bring back an actor who’s still alive.

Another possibility is that Jay Garrick was played by a crew member who coincidentally looks like Sears. A situation like this happened with the film Halloween Kills, where the Dr. Loomis character was played by a crew member from that film, who looked like Loomis’ deceased actor, Donald Pleasence. Either Andy Muschietti, The Flash‘s director, or the crew member in question, would’ve likely revealed their participation in The Flash if this were the case though.

Ultimately, there might not be closure to the mystery behind Jay Garrick’s appearance in The Flash, until potential bonus features reveal how the sequence was developed in The Flash‘s home media release. In the lead-up to The Flash‘s home media debut, there will definitely be more stories about the process behind Jay Garrick’s cameo. DC’s The Flash is now playing exclusively in theaters everywhere.
