A new trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has just been revealed at New York Comic Con 2023. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a new series on Apple TV+, set in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse franchise. You can check out the newly revealed trailer for the new MonsterVerse series, featuring Godzilla, below:
The series follows siblings, Cate Randa (Anna Sawai) and Kentaro (Ren Watabe), as they uncover the secret behind their father’s work with Monarch, the MonsterVerse’s kaiju-researching organization. Their investigation brings them into contact with a former Monarch agent named Lee Shaw, portrayed by Kurt Russell in the present day, and in flashbacks by Russell’s real-life son, Wyatt Russell.
The MonsterVerse is a shared universe film franchise, bringing famous giant monsters, Godzilla and King Kong, together in the same world. The MonsterVerse began with 2014’s Godzilla. Its latest cinematic installment is the upcoming Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, which will be released on Apr. 12, 2024.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ New Trailer Shows More Kaiju Action and Teases The Mystery Behind the Titular Organization
The new trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters begins by showing the Battle of San Francisco, depicted in Godzilla, from the point of view of Cate Randa. Randa’s narration notes how Monarch agents were at the battle but acted like they were waiting for it to happen. The trailer proceeds to show Randa and her brother discussing Monarch and their father’s involvement in the organization’s research.
As the trailer introduces Shaw urging the siblings to discover the truth behind their father’s disappearance, footage of Randa and the other supporting characters is intercut with a young Shaw and Bill Randa (Anders Holm) exploring a wrecked ship. The rest of the trailer teases a new kaiju, associated with a glowing hole in an Arctic area, and scenes of the characters trying in vain to escape the destruction left by each of the kaiju.
As the trailer ends, Shaw says “The world is on fire. If you want to save millions of lives, we can use some help,” Godzilla is then shown rising from the ground around the main characters and roaring triumphantly. Besides the footage from the previous trailer, this trailer’s most interesting aspects are the scenes of young Shaw and Bill Randa escaping from the kaiju in the shipwreck and the arctic kaiju’s rampage.
The resemblance between the hatching kaiju eggs in the shipwreck and the female M.U.T.O’s eggs in Godzilla suggests both kaiju have a connection of some sort. The kaiju encounter at the shipwreck could be Shaw’s first interaction with a kaiju. This flashback could be one of many, explaining why older Shaw is cynical about Monarch’s mission to research kaiju.
The arctic kaiju’s breath seems to freeze anything in its path, as evidenced by the brief shot of the plane’s pilot freezing, as a result of the kaiju’s attack. The blue lights on the kaiju in one shot, and the glow radiating from the arctic hole in another, imply bioluminescence is another one of its special abilities. The threat posed by this kaiju in the present day could be why Godzilla is needed to bring order back to nature.
Ultimately, this new trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters gives a much clearer picture of the level of kaiju mayhem fans have come to expect that will be in the series.
