The Apple TV+ series will dive into the history of the titular organization after the events of 2014's Godzilla
Monarch Legacy of Monsters - Godzilla

Apple TV+ shared a first look at the new Godzilla Monsterverse television spinoff series, Monarch: Legacy of Monster. With multiple new projects on the horizon, the Monsterverse continues to stomp its way to audiences everywhere. The Monsterverse is a kaiju-centric franchise from Legendary Entertainment, rebooting Godzilla and King Kong in a shared universe for a new generation. The franchise began when Godzilla was released in 2014. Godzilla Vs Kong is the latest live-action film installment, which is set to receive a sequel later next year.

As the release of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire nears, the Monsterverse has branched out into streaming projects, including the animated series, Skull Island, on Netflix. It looks like Legacy of Monsters is the next streaming series to spin off from the ongoing Monsterverse.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Takes The Fight To Apple TV+

Apple has officially confirmed the previously untitled Monsterverse Apple TV+ series has been officially titled, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The show will depict the efforts of two siblings who seek to uncover their father’s connection to Monarch, the Monsterverse’s resident organization that is dedicated to researching creatures like Godzilla, along with containing and destroying them if need be.

Real-life father and son, Kurt and Wyatt Russell, are also confirmed to be playing a singular character across different time periods named Lee Shaw. The series is set to primarily take place after the events of Godzilla, which was released in 2014.

This news confirms The Illuminerdi’s exclusive report from 2022, regarding Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ working title. Our exclusive report about Kurt and Wyatt Russell’s involvement in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, along with details about their character and the series’ multiple time periods, has also been confirmed by this news.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ Multiple Time Periods Connect It To Previous Monsterverse Installments

Several first-look photos imply that the show will depict the battle of San Francisco from Godzilla through another point of view. Notably, the Monsterverse first explored part of the same battle from another perspective in Godzilla: King of The Monsters‘ opening scene.

The character who witnesses the battle could be one of the main siblings or another Monarch scientist. If the character portrayed by Anna Sawai is the perspective we will follow, and she is a scientist for the organization. It appears her encounter with Godzilla could initiate developments that will reverberate throughout the season.

The show’s emphasis on multiple time periods, by focusing on Lee Shaw, could further tie the series to other Monsterverse films, such as Kong: Skull Island, and payoff the franchise’s world-building. The flashbacks set in the 1950s could depict Shaw meeting different members of the organization, including a younger version of John Goodman’s Bill Randa from Kong: Skull Island.

Shaw could’ve also been a witness to the failed 1950s nuclear bomb attacks against Godzilla, which were first mentioned in Godzilla. Witnessing these actions could’ve left Shaw fearful of Godzilla and disillusioned with Monarch, by the time we see him in Legacy of Monsters‘ modern events.

The confirmation of Kurt and Wyatt Russell’s involvement in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and the reveal of more of the series’ plot details have the potential to make the series one of the biggest ones ever on the Apple TV+ streaming service.
