What if Hela learned martial arts from the inhabitant of Ta-Lo?
According to new rumors posed on Twitter, Marvel’s What If…? Season 2 will show us!
Famous scooper CanWeGetSomeToast reports that Episode 204 of What If…? will feature Hela, daughter of Odin, finding the Ten Rings. After being kicked out of Asgard, as we saw in Thor: Ragnarok, Hela manages to escape being imprisoned in Hel and instead heads to Ta-Lo.
Ta-Lo is known to fans of Shang Chi as a mystical village hidden in another dimension. It’s a place of immense power and magic, which acts as a sanctuary for the safeguarding of mystical forces and artifacts. It’s also the home of various legendary beings, including the Great Protector, a benevolent and powerful dragon. The goddess of death should fit right in!

Once in Ta-Lo, Hela learns martial arts from the inhabitants, until Odin invades and war breaks out between Ta-Lo and Asgard. When taking part in the war, Hela will wear armor that is “all white” rather than her traditional black-and-green. While this is a departure for her, this isn’t a new look for Asgardians – Valkyrie wears all-white armor. Could this be a hint at how Hela will look, or what her role in this universe will be? Could Hela become the next queen of the Asgardians?
In the comics, Hela’s armor is an important part of her character, as without it, the left side of her body quickly decays. It will be interesting to see how something as simple as a change of color impacts on her characterization.
Who is Hela in the MCU?
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hela is the primary antagonist of the movie Thor: Ragnarok, released in 2017. She is played by actress Cate Blanchett, who has previously been confirmed as reprising her role in What If…? season 2. As the firstborn of Odin, Hela is the goddess of death and Thor’s older sister, which is a huge departure from her parentage in traditional Norse mythology, where she is one of Loki’s children.
Hela’s MCU introduction occurs when Thor and Loki inadvertently release her from her imprisonment, which was imposed by Odin to prevent her immense power from causing destruction across the realms. Upon her release, Hela reveals her ambitions to conquer Asgard and expand her influence.

In the film, Hela is shown as a formidable warrior with incredible strength and abilities. She derives power from Asgard itself and demonstrates mastery over weapons, particularly her iconic necroswords. Her connection to Asgard gives her significant power, enabling her to manifest and control supernatural abilities. Training with the martial arts masters of Ta-Lo will only seek to enhance these abilities, and may well lead her to be one of Asgard’s most formidable foes. But the question remains: will she be depicted as good or evil in What If…?
Throughout Thor: Ragnarok, Hela seeks to claim the throne of Asgard, asserting her dominance over the realms and enforcing her rule through force. Her character serves as a force of reckoning, challenging Thor and sparking a conflict that threatens the existence of Asgard. With the backing of Ta-Lo, she might actually achieve this dream, either to the benefit or the detriment of humanity at large.
Will Hela be a hero or a villain in What If…?
That’s something we don’t know for sure, though given Ta-Lo is depicted as a sanctuary for mystical and magical beings, it seems safe to assume that any invader will be depicted as the villain of the story. So, if Hela is defending the mystical realm, and successful in doing so, she may well be heralded as a hero.
When will we see What If…? Season 2?
There still isn’t a confirmed premiere date for the second season of What If…? However, it is not expected to drop on Disney+ until the beginning of 2024 at the earliest. The third season is already tentatively scheduled for a 2025 release.
