Actress Julia Garner will learn to fear a full moon in Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s upcoming theatrical remake of the Wolf Man, per The Hollywood Reporter. Garner will star opposite Christopher Abbott for the new film from director Leigh Whannell. Garner reunites with Abbot after previously working with him in the 2011 film Martha Marcy May Marlene.

The new reboot of Wolf Man is the second remake of the 1941 horror film, The Wolf Man, having first been remade in 2010 as The Wolfman starring Benicio del Toro and directed by Joe Johnston. The upcoming film will be directed and co-written by Whannell, who also directed The Invisible Man remake in 2020.
Julia Garner Is The Latest Actor To Be Involved in Blumhouse’s Remake of The ’40s Horror Classic
The plot of Wolf Man follows a family dealing with a dangerous creature’s presence. The movie will be released on October 25th, 2024, just in time for Halloween.
Garner is most famous for her award-winning role as Ruth Langmore in the Netflix original series Ozark. She earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series last year for her work on the show.
Garner is definitely a surging, rising star at the moment. THR reports that she will star in the upcoming reimaging as the mother in the family, alongside Abbott’s role as the father. These casting announcements have many implications for what the upcoming film’s plot could be.
Wolf Man May Reimagine The Iconic Character Through A Supernatural Family Dynamic
I think Whannell’s Wolf Man will be a thematic sequel to The Invisible Man, exploring the way domestic abuse affects a familial unit in a more bizarre manner. Whannell’s The Invisible Man used the idea of that character as a symbol for the domestic abuse the titular threat inflicts on the main lead.
Perhaps, Wolf Man will depict the family’s encounter with the wolf-like being, the father getting attacked and becoming a wolfman himself, and Garner’s character protecting herself and their children from him. Therefore, while Abbott might be playing the Wolf Man, Garner could be playing the film’s actual protagonist.

Garner’s casting suggests Blumhouse wants this remake to have a prestige quality to it. This makes sense since the original film was one of many 20th-century horror films that made Universal what it is today. It’s only right to give the material a proper and faithful new take. While Wolf Man‘s release date seems kind of rushed, I’m very confident Blumhouse will deliver a great remake.
Ultimately, Julia Garner’s casting is another good sign Wolf Man will successfully bring the character back for a new generation of horror fans. It should be interesting to see what the creative team behind 2020’s Invisible Man remake comes up with.
