Lil Dicky is back with more crude, insightful humor in his latest album. Penith (The DAVE Soundtrack) is streaming now.

There are over 20 tracks on Penith, and the entire release runs for just over an hour. Only 3 of these songs were officially released prior to the debut of Penith. Dave Burd, AKA Lil Dicky, has assembled a hilarious, heart-breaking group of songs that will impress fans old and new.

The wait for a Lil Dicky sophomore album has been a long one, but Penith makes everything worth it. Dicky first came onto the music scene with the release of singles like Jewish Flow and Ex-Boyfriend. After building his name on platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud, Dicky began work on his debut album. Professional Rapper arrived in 2015, and it featured huge artists like Snoop Dogg and Brendon Urie.

LIL DICKY – The Road To Penith Is One Of A Kind

The album had more than just impressive features in its arsenal however. Lil Dicky proved his comedic edge and dynamic flow on solo tracks like Who Knew and Bruh… To top that off, Molly showed just how sensitive the rapper famous for penis jokes can be. Following the success of Dave Burd’s first album as Lil Dicky, many assumed that work on a second album would begin after some touring to promote Professional Rapper.

This was not the case, because Burd changed the name of his game by developing a TV show instead. On March 4, 2020, Dave premiered on FX. Dave is a TV show loosely based on Lil Dicky’s real life. It’s a dark comedy that stars Dave Burd as himself in the lead role. His hype-man GaTa also plays himself in a major supporting role. Christine Ko plays Emma, Andrew Santino plays Mike, and Taylor Misiak plays Ally. Emma has a complicated relationship as Dave’s ex-coworker and graphic designer. Mike is Lil Dicky’s manager, and Ally is Dave’s girlfriend before their big breakup.

When the news broke that a Lil Dicky TV show was in development, many were skeptical. But Lil Dicky is forming a habit of overcoming low expectations and ridicule through his incredible artistry. Dave is hilarious regularly, but it also takes time to become incredibly stressful, tense, and surreal. If his song Molly made you sad, and you haven’t watched Dave yet, get ready to sob.

LIL DICKY – Penith (The DAVE Soundtrack) Is An Excellent Album

Several scenes will shatter your heart and leave you holding the pieces, and again, this is about a guy whose original claim to fame is genital comedy. Another thing that made Dave special was the introduction of new music throughout the show. The Dicky fanbase was starving for new music, and the TV show provided that, albeit in an incomplete manner.

The only songs from Dave that were released before Penith were Hi I’m Dave, We Good Ft. GaTa, and Check Up by GaTa. Mr. McAdams was released as the lead single for Penith. Other songs like Hearsay and My D!ck Sucks were available to listen to on YouTube and in the episodes, but the tracks were missing material. A majority of the songs from Dave Seasons 1-3 have now been finalized and that body of work composes Penith.

In the Dave TV show, Penith is the name of Lil Dicky’s debut album (as opposed to Professional Rapper). There are some major differences between our Penith (The DAVE Soundtrack) and the fictional Penith of the Dave universe. For example, one of the catchiest tracks, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, was released as a single unrelated to Penith in the storyline of the Dave TV show. This album is delightful because it fleshes out the world of Dave as fans wait for news about a potential fourth season.

LIL DICKY – Dave Fuses Comedy & Tragedy With Great Music

Emotional songs like Ally’s Song and Harrison Ave have lines on Penith that were never heard on the Dave TV show itself. It’s almost funny to apply canon to a show like Dave, but it adds value to this album. We can safely assume that the new lines exist in the continuity of the TV show. If these words and rhyme schemes exist in that world, we can learn more about the character of Dave Burd/Lil Dicky by listening to the music.

Lil Dicky has fused television and rapping with Dave, and he’s taking that fusion a step further with Penith (The DAVE Soundtrack). If you enjoy the TV show, this new album only makes it better. If you haven’t seen Dave, fire up Hulu and get started. Even if you don’t watch Dave, Penith is still certain to be a funny, shocking experience for your ears.

Penith (The DAVE Soundtrack) is streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, and all major platforms now. Dave is available to stream on Hulu.
