Warner Bros. dropped a new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, with hopes to kick off the movie theater experience once again.

Director and writer Christopher Nolan has brought a lot to the film industry in his time behind the camera. One of his largest gifts has proven to be his ability to bend his narratives so that, as a viewer, your reality warps along with the characters in his stories. We’ve seen him use this technique multiple times, in new and creative ways with each new release. He shot to fame with Memento, a story about an amnesiac trying to solve a murder mystery. In The Prestige, the viewer is often as dazzled by the magician’s trickery on stage, as the audience in the film. While Inception made you question the ground beneath your very feet.

Nolan is looking to up the ante once again with his upcoming release of Tenet. The film was always thought to be the gem of the 2020 summer movie season. After cineplexes have been shut down worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic, Tenet is now being looked at as a movie that will revive the spirit of cinema.

The new feature stars John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman), Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse), Michael Caine (The Dark Knight), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Elizabeth Debicki (Widows), Kenneth Branagh (Dunkirk), and many more notable names. While the story is being kept under tight wraps, we do have this new trailer to clue us in.

Tenet Trailer

Washington’s unnamed character seems to utilize a form of time manipulation called, Inversion, to help him in his secret mission. While the threat in the film isn’t made implicitly clear, the stakes are. The world is at risk.

Tenet looks to promise Nolan’s trademark style of intellectual action and a puzzle of a plot. Washington has already proven his dramatic chops in BlacKkKlansman, so it should be a treat to see the former athlete transition into the role of action star. Of course, the movie’s co-star, Robert Pattinson, will have the world’s attention on him as well, as fan’s eagerly await the release of his next Warner Bros’ project, The Batman and evaluate his performance.

If Tenet’s trailer is any indication, Pattinson looks to have all the charisma and style needed for the job. Now the only question is if he’s actually playing the role of Christopher Nolan in the film, because he certainly is pulling off the director’s distinct wardrobe and swag.

Nolan is a film traditionalist in many ways and is an advocate for preserving the theatrical experience, long before this year. So, the director’s insistence that Tenet be released theatrically shouldn’t surprise many. The big mystery, outside of the film’s plot, is if the movie will indeed make its ambitious July release date. While the country is opening up, there is the threat of a resurgence of the virus, along with people’s overall understandable apprehension with public gatherings.

Tenet will undoubtedly be released in theaters, the only question is if it will make the July 17th release date. Even in the trailer they provided a non-committal, “Coming To Theaters.” Warner Bros. will have to make some tough decisions in the coming weeks, but the studio looks like they have a movie that will be worth the wait. However, long that wait may be for fans.
