When the news of CW’s version of “Crisis On Infinite Earths” aired, fans were excited to see what surprises the network would provide. One of the biggest reveals was of guest stars was legendary voice actor, Kevin Conroy, who portrayed an alternate version of Bruce Wayne. It was fitting since Conroy has made his name by voicing Bruce Wayne/Batman on Batman: The Animated Series.
Conroy’s live-action interpretation of Wayne is morally ambiguous and not the no-killing version of Batman that he had portrayed in animation.
Kevin Conroy On His Experience Playing Bruce Wayne
On the Inside of You Podcast with Michael Rosenbaum, the same actor who portrayed Lex Luthor on the Smallville TV series, Kevin Conroy talks about the problems that came with taking up the role. He admits he signed the papers without seeing a screenplay of the crossover. It’s interesting to hear Conroy reveal this as that was the reason that Rosenbaum had previously made for not returning as Lex Luthor, as he did not have a copy of the script before.
Here is what Conroy had to say about the negative reactions.
“The fans were not happy about that. They didn’t like seeing that version of Bruce Wayne. But for me it was fun, it was a lot of fun to sort of stretch my acting chops a little bit. They didn’t tell me anything about the Batman. They just said he was the Batman in the future, an old Bruce Wayne. I said, ‘You mean like in Batman Beyond old Bruce Wayne?’ They said, ‘No, he’s not 80. But he’s older and he’s in bad shape.’”

“They’re so guarded with their scripts, the studios, they don’t give them out,” the actor continued. “So they didn’t give me anything. I got the script basically when I was about to get on a plane to fly to Vancouver to do the show, I hadn’t seen anything. I said yes because I was so excited to do something on camera again [after] 25 years.”
It looks like Kevin Conroy just as surprised as fans after getting to Vancouver and getting the chance to play a live-version of Bruce Wayne. While the interpretation was not well liked, it was still a great moment to see Conroy in the flesh nevertheless. For many, his voice as the Caped Crusader will continue to speak for years to come and this role will only make his legacy greater.
