It’s a great time to be a Star Wars fan right now. With the success of The Mandalorian and potentially great new Star Wars content coming, fans are excited. But George Lucas isn’t 100% satisfied.
Disney Plus is on the verge of bringing multiple new series, such as Ahsoka, Rangers Of The New Republic, Acolyte, Andor, Lando, and one starring Obi-Wan Kenobi. Not to mention the upcoming animated series like Visions, A Droid Story, and The Bad Batch. Finally, the new upcoming Patty Jenkins directed Star Wars movie, Rogue Squadron, signals a resurgence for the brand.

However, all of this upcoming content wouldn’t have been possible without the Skywalker Saga films. The original trilogy was a cultural phenomenon that paved the way to a new generation of media and technology, while the sequel trilogy had mixed reviews but was still successful and well-liked. The prequel trilogy, on the other hand, was not well received by fans and had negative reviews from critics.
Seeing George Lucas In A New Light
The prequel trilogy has been re-evaluated by fans recently, and they’ve started to slowly appreciate it. One of the main reasons, of course, is the Clone Wars animated series that redeemed some of the prequel trilogies negatives. Anakin became a likeable character, fixed some plot holes first told in the prequel films, expanded its universe, made Jedi and Clone Troopers both relatable, and of course introduced us to Ahsoka. Star Wars creator George Lucas has spoken out and given his take on why he does not agree with critics who bashed the prequel trilogy.
For George Lucas’ career, the Star Wars franchise was both a blessing and a curse. From the great success of the Original Trilogy to the low points of the Prequel Trilogy, Lucas still kept true to his vision and told the story he wanted to tell. After the negative reception from the fans and critics, Lucas decided to sell Star Wars and Lucasfilm to Disney. Disney’s rendition of their own sequel trilogy was mixed, with some even calling it unoriginal. This prompted fans to appreciate the Prequel Trilogy more because even though it was poorly written, it still had fresh and new ideas including expanding the Star Wars universe.
Given the newfound love and respect of the prequels, Lucas gave his opinion on the prequels’ critics.
In a recent interview with author Paul Duncan in The Star Wars Archives 1999-2005 ,Lucas explained that fans could not understand the prequels because its dialogue is transparent. The prequel trilogy is known from fans and critics to have “dull and bad” dialogue. The film that was hit hard with this claim was Star Wars Episode 2: Attack Of The Clones, which Lucas addressed.
Hayden Christensen, for example, was made to say words such as “ I hate sand” and “I am haunted by the kiss that you should have never given me”. Let’s just say it was not his best work, but has the chance to redeem himself in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Lucas did express he did find the dialogue he wrote for Episode 2 was corny, but he stated that the style had to kept consistent with the entire film series.
Lucas stated that, “Most people don’t understand the style of Star Wars, and they don’t get there’s an underlying motif that is very much like a 1930s Western or Saturday matinee serial.” With all that said, Lucas still believes and reaffirms his views on the prequel trilogy. His honest view of the cheesiness of the prequels is perfectly fine, as it was his vision and his story. Even though many fans disagree and keeps comparing the other two trilogies with it.
In the end Star Wars was created by a successful, brilliant, visionary, and creative filmmaker in Lucas. Yes some of his decisions in the prequel and some can argue the original trilogy films were questionable. Yet in the end it help expand the franchise by its fascinating story and memorable characters.
Without the prequels, there would not have been the highly successful Clone Wars and Rebels animated series. That’s including the upcoming live action shows, such as Ahsoka and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and even the mixed sequel trilogy. The prequels did have many flaws, but one can not deny the incredible positive impact that they have had on that galaxy far far away.
